Skylanders Day at GameStop Saturday, June 22nd, 2013: A First Look atthe Limited Poster and the Swap Force Flyer

If you saw last night's video where I highlighted some great Skylander deals from Toys'R'Us and GameStop, you are good to go...If not, skim back (or find it via the above blog link) and check it out.

I actually made the call this evening and found that my regular GameStop had just gotten Polar Whirlwind in and stocked her.  I asked if they could hold me one as I would head straight there from work and the response was that they'd have one for me...This made me think there must have been quite a few.

I rushed up after work, despite it looking like storms were coming, and headed in...There she was on the wall...Polar Whirlwind!  Just below her I saw a few regular Ninjini figures (which for many has been harder to find than Scarlet).  But speaking of Scarlet, the variant, ninja genie was no where to be seen.

I took 2 Polars to the register and they rang up as "not for sale" with the street date of 6/22.  I explained the promotion and that some stores were selling them and since I had called I figured it would be good to go...

Since I'm a regular they apologized, quickly pulled Polar and Ninjini off the shelf and said they'd save a Polar for me and appreciated the cooperation.  With an uncertain schedule for Saturday they went ahead and hooked me up with the poster AND a generic info sheet that I assume they will have a lot of...The poster is pretty cool, but it is the info sheet we focus on in the video...In addition to having nice artwork for S3 Terrafin, we saw a new Adventure Pack:

I can tell you that some GameStops will sell Polar (and everything else) early, but they should not do so...That said, it doesn't hurt to check your local store in the event you can for sure land Polar and avid the rush and potential headache to get her later on...

I will give you this info...

It looked like this particular store had 6 Polars and 6 Ninjinis.  The flyer explicitly mentions Scarlet, so there is a good chance she could come in another shipment possibly with more Polars.  Giants are generally 6 to a box and if Scarlet is up in limited quantities there should be 6.  Ninjini was pulled because her SKU rang up to be street dated as well.  I mention this for the simple fact I still know a lot of people who have Scarlet, but not regular Ninjini...this event may help you out.

I did ask if Polar was a timed exclusive, or a dedicated, store exclusive (ie Jade Flaswhing at Target, Royal Double Trouble at GameStop etc), and the answer was unknown.  I will lean towards Polar being a dedicated exclusive given GameStop is due something special in my mind (if you recall I had predicted Scarlet would be their exclusive).

The poster is pretty cool and measures 12" x 16" while the flyer is standard 8.5" x 11" just of a better stock.

There were no signs of S2 Drobot and I can attest to Ninjini being new as she was not in store Monday when I pre-ordered the 3DS Starter Pack for Swap Force.  By the time I headed out the storms were about to hit and I had to abandon my initial plan to check Walmart for S2 Drobot...

So, in conclusion Skylander Day should be a big hit...great deals on Starter Packs and Battle Packs, posters, Polar Whirlwind, and a few Ninjini or Scarlet Ninjinis hanging around the shop!

Well, for those of you following the series you know that along with our Camo vs Pop Fizz Sudden Death Showdown, we ran a poll asking if you'd like to see the series go straight to the final tournament, OR continue with Castaways vs Castaways and Newlanders vs Newlanders...After the votes were tallied, most sided with me and want to see the epicness that is Castaways vs Castaways and Newlanders vs Newlanders!

So, we essentially have 7 more matches (a total of 15 overall) before the tournament gets seeded for the final showdown.

You have already seen the GamePack and Travel Tote...Once you get your Skylanders where you are going, you need a way to play with them...Why not bring the characters you love into your controller?

PowerA set up the Pro Pack Mini with a lot of "little things."

First off, we have a selection between Blue and Orange...Both Giants sets feature Bouncer on the MiniRemote and Fright Rider on the secondary controller.

Second, on the functional end of the spectrum there is what is called a "Soft Touch" grip...It is hard to explain, but it feels good and provides slip resistance.  This controller is slightly smaller than a regular Wiimote and that bodes well for kids and those with smaller hands...

The Action Buttons (A-1-2) have all been enlarged for easier control and precision...On top of that, they light up!  This was  very cool feature, and something I was unaware of...They actually illuminate quite well.  In the video I showed this by highlighting Fright Rider, but I also used the light to flip the lights back on and not the fan!  I think it is a great pairing for those that enjoy playing with the GITD Portal with the lights out!  It is almost as if it is a bridged connection between you and the Giant or LightCore Skylander!

While the video rendered, I played around with it on WiiU and despite being really hot and humid my hand never sweat...The crispness and quick return of the buttons and control stick on the nunchuck are indicative of quality.

All-in-all I am very impressed and stoked to have what will serve as a stand alone controller for the WiiU!  This will save me from having to sync and re-sync controllers every time I switch consoles...Plus with the unique artwork and textured grip I will be able to keep the controllers straight.

Skylanders Swap Force Exclusive E3 Trailer

Here is the OFFICIAL E3 Swap Fore Trailer...kind of an advanced and more playful version of the first:

However, there is another version...the LIVE E3 version!  And it is longer than the one shown above!

There may be subtle things you don't pick up on...Let me outline a few:

First, it was a challenge to film the sequence as it was projected on Activision's swanky close-to-full-circle screen.

Second, if you play close attention (and a few times I turned the camera to the floor to showcase it), you will see the lighting is sometimes an Elemental Symbol!

Third, there was a smoke/mist coming up from the perimeter of the screen.

Fourth, anyitime you heard anything "loud" the stage was literally rocking underneath our feet...I watched people jump off-and-on all day while near it...They also showed a few other trailers that literally had the place rocking!

So, here it is...the same new trailer for Swap Force, but LIVE and from my vantage point:

*If it looks a little dead that is because it was...This was a SPECIAL AFTER HOURS run of the trailer just for those of us brought out to cover Swap Force.  The entire trip was filled with little things like that which really made a difference.  Having the smaller group of dedicated fans up on the stage really allowed each of us to really take in the trailer...As we all tried to anticipate where the next character was going to enter, you would see cameras scrolling anxiously right to left only to have them quickly tunnel the other direction when the appearing character emerged in their periphery.

Your Questions You Want Answered at E3

Nigel: What is one SwapForce character of each element?

Phillip:

-When are the 4 Sidekicks for Giants (Barkley, Mini-Jini, Eye-Small, Thumpling) being released and what will we have to do to get them. Point out the usual availability issues for us hard core fans with the approach taken last time with the Sidekicks. 

-When is Wave 5 going to happen? Why is it so much delayed compared to SSA. Related, how is Skylanders going to compete with Disney Infinity?

-Polar Whirlwind. Nuf said, you know what to ask.

-General issues with availabity, especially the variants like granite crusher. You know the routine with the herd of scaplers.. etc. 

-Would Activision ever consider directly selling toys (so we could actually get them). I know this would be competeing with retailers but you know all the usual issues with availability. Point out all the wonderful issues with eBay.

-Given the 3DS Skylanders history, how is the 3DS game related to the console game?

-When will the posters with all the characters be released

-How many new Legendaries are there going to be?

-How many variants are there going to be? Are the variants going to be detectable in game like they are in Skylanders Giants?

-Will Series 3 reposed (the new stealth elf) be playable in prior games and which ones?

-How, exactly, are they labeling the series of characters. I mean the wording of the "magic moment". Like Glow-in-the-Dark Sonic Boom shows 
up in Skylanders Giants as Series 2 Special Sonic Boom

-What are the "movement base" names and how many are there. Swash Buckler's legs are called exactly what?. Same with Blast Zone. If there are going to be 16 new Swap Force and only 8 types of bases how soon will we be able to get into all areas? (xmas or before I hope).

-SSA had gold, Character Level, Upgrades, and Heroics. SG added more Heroics, Wow Pow to some chars, switchable upgrades to some chars, and per character quests. What new abilities will the existing characters get? Stealth elf would be a great example as she has a Series 1, Series 2, Series 2 Legendary, and Series 3 version. 

-Is Spyro getting a Series 3 character and could they release it a little sooner and with better availability?

-Is Spyro getting a LightCore version?

-Which characters are getting LightCore?

-How many total blue base characters are there going to be both on the poster and legendaries AND variants. Even the Brady Games Skylanders Giants Offical Strategy Guide didn't list them all (GITD Dark Cynder, GITD Sonic Boom, Golden Flameslinger). I didn't even count the Chop Chop for Toy Fair.

-How many new heroics are there going to be?

-Will they be adding any new quests to the characters?

-What is the new level cap?

-What is the new gold cap? Skylanders Giants is 65,000

-How many XBOX achievements will there be? SSA has 38 and SG had 45. (if you haven't played Skylanders on an XBOX, they have additional achievements that syncronize with XBOX Live) (which is why I know 65,000 is the max gold, its one of the XBOX achievements)

-How many Chapters?

-Anything else you can find out about the "mechanical" details of Skylanders Swap-Force.Skylanders 2014 
-Could they make the prior game characters path switchable like series 2 repose are now but for ALL prior characters?
-How long will Activision continue to support Series 1?
