Crash Bandicoot® N. Sane Trilogy Remastered in HD for the
New Generation and Nostalgic Fans

SANTA MONICA, Calif.—June 8, 2017 – Activision is set to kick off this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) with global debuts from the industry’s leading franchises. Beginning Tuesday, June 13, at the LA Convention Center, attendees will experience the first gameplay premiere of Call of Duty®: WWII multiplayer, the new character-driven story and activities of Destiny 2, and the reimagined and beloved Crash Bandicoot® N. Sane Trilogy.

“Some of the most talked about and highly anticipated entertainment experiences of the year aren’t playing at your local movie theater, inside a stadium or on the airwaves; they are happening at E3, as interactive entertainment takes center stage of pop culture,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision. “And we are thrilled to be front and center with two of the most hotly anticipated games of the year, Call of Duty: WWII and Destiny 2, both of which will be playable at E3. We’ve been pouring our hearts and souls into these games and we can’t wait for our fans to get their hands on them!”

Call of Duty: WWII marks a return to the fast action, grounded roots of Call of Duty®.  E3 2017 celebrates the world reveal of the all-new multiplayer.  Developed by Sledgehammer Games, Call of Duty: WWII offers a host of new Multiplayer modes, features and gameplay innovations set in iconic World War II locations in the European theater of war.

Players will enlist in the conflict by selecting from five iconic World War II Divisions, in a fundamentally new way to invest in your multiplayer career. Join the Airborne Division, the first to the fight, where you move fast and stay quiet; the Mountain Division, where a sharp shooter focus is precise and deadly; the Infantry Division as the tip of the spear; the Armored Division, which brings the heaviest firepower; or the Expeditionary Force who is packing heat with incendiary shells. In addition to the core Multiplayer experience available for hands-on gameplay at E3, players will also play War Mode, developed in partnership with Raven Software, a narrative-based mode pitting Allied versus Axis soldiers in team-driven battles for key strategic objectives.

Call of Duty: WWII multiplayer also features Headquarters, a franchise first reimagining of the Call of Duty Multiplayer ecosystem, giving the community entirely new ways to connect, compete and engage.

Call of Duty: WWII pre-orders at participating retailers include access to the Private Beta, available first on PlayStation®4, scheduled for later this year. At E3, players can get their first PS4 Pro hands-on experience with the new Multiplayer at the Activision booth #1001 in the South Hall and in the PlayStation booth #4322 in the West Hall.

Following the epic, global Destiny 2 Gameplay Premiere which took place in May, Activision and Bungie will showcase Destiny 2, providing an array of hands-on experiences for attendees where they can play the all-new story campaign as well as competitive, and cooperative multiplayer gameplay.  In addition, the playable debut of a brand-new Guardian subclass, the Arcstrider Hunter, will be available, whose “super” ability is to summon an Arc-empowered staff to be used for close-quarters melee combat. Attendees are invited to play Destiny 2 on PS4 Pro in the Activision booth #1001 in the South Hall and PlayStation’s booth #4322 in the West Hall, and on PC in NVIDIA’s booth #5230 in the West Hall.

Crash is back, as Activision is rolling out the orange carpet at E3! The iconic marsupial of gaming will make his appearance at E3 where players can play new levels in HD from the remastered Crash Bandicoot® N. Sane Trilogy. More innovations to the franchise will be announced at the show, and players can experience the fun first-hand by visiting the N. Sane Crash Experience in the South Hall lobby for hands-on gameplay, photo opportunities and daily giveaways.

Crashing the Party at E3: Crash Bandicoot Revealed as Guest Sensei in Skylanders Imaginators during Sony's Conference

Just like last year saw Bowser and Donkey Kong revealed as "Skymiibo" for Skylanders SuperChargers, this year's E3 delivered another ground-breaking reveal...the beloved, Crash Bandicoot is coming to Skylanders Imaginators!

Crashing the Skylanders Imaginators Party at E3: Crash Bandicoot Reveal!
Toy Images, Illustrations, Screenshots, and Gameplay!

Reports claiming he will only be available in PS3/PS4 Starter Packs or only be playable on PlayStations are FALSE.

Crash Bandicoot will be playable on both Xbox One and Xbox 360 as well as the Nintendo Wii U.

And while he will be available at launch exclusively in Special PS3/PS4 Starter Packs, he should be headed for a stand-alone release later on...

Also of note, the Crash Bandicoot Starter Packs will run you $99.99.  Regular ($74.99) Starter Packs will also be available for both PlayStation consoles.

As seen in the video, they have done a fantastic job integrating Crash as a Skylander and he looks right at home.  Just as Bowser and Donkey Kong had faithful movesets, the same applies to Crash Bandicoot.

Crash mega-fans will also be happy to hear that Crash Bandicoot, Crash Bandicoot 2, and Crash Bandicoot: Warped are all slated for release in 2017 as HD remasters for PS4 Owners.  Those who fall into that camp are also likely to remember that this is the 20th Anniversary for Crash Bandicoot, so the timeline ties in quite well.

I have created two-new polls on the Skylander Club Forum:
-Crash Hype
-Crash vs Bowser & Donkey Kong

Anyone can vote in the polls, so please do and let your sentiments be known!

Nintendo Amiibo Showcase at E3

I promised I would release this video after all of the Skylanders SWAP Force stuff was wrapped up, and that time is now!

This is footage I shot from the excessively epic Nintendo Booth at this year's E3.  I have to say that the pre-order shots you have seen on Amazon, GameStop, and Toys'R'Us etc., come nowhere near doing these figures justice.

Nintendo Amiibo Showcase at E3

The Amiibo line is very impressive with incredible detail, and that is just based on my look thru the glass display case.  I really wish I could have gotten some hands-on time with them, or an interview, but time was tight and I was happy just to get a good look at them.

The Amiibo figures honestly look more like a high dollar display piece than a video game accessory, but that is the beauty of it I suppose.  The most surprising part, given the size and detail, is that they retail for $12.99!

I plan to pick a few of these up and unbox/showcase them upon their release.  I will also use them in the compatible games and look forward to seeing how they interact in titles past Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS.

If you haven't checked them out yet, or put in any pre-orders, here is a link to their Amazon Page:
Amazon.com Amiibo Listings

They are a big step up from the Pokemon figures used in Pokemon Rumble U.

Stay tuned for much more coverage on Nintendo's Amiibo figures!

Skylander Ideas: Skylanders Battles: A Standalone Battle Mode/PvP Game with DLC

Skylanders Ideas Series
Skylanders Battles: A Standalone Battle Mode/PVP Game

So, continuing on in our "Skylanders Ideas" series, this is another idea I pitched at E3.  Basically, since so much Trap Team info was off the table, we got to a point of just talking about the game and I was able to highlight some of my opinions, one of them being Battle Mode.

I never dreamed I would be releasing this video in the wake of news that Trap Team wouldn't have the usual Battle Mode setup, but I suppose it just makes this take on that much more significance.  I truly think this is the way to go with "Battle Mode."  I thought it shortly after Giants, this summer at E3, and still think it is the best option in light of the news...I don't think it was as well received as the "plain jane" variant proposal, but it didn't fall on deaf ears either.  At this point in time, I truly hope something similar is planned as PvP is a huge part of the Skylanders franchise and offers the most replay value imo.

The Original Issue

How to improve Battle Mode/PvP in Skylanders.

The Chatter

Most, or at least the majority of those voicing opinions on this matter have taken the mantra of "Online or Bust."  That is, players REALLY WANT Online PvP so they can play with friends, or just other Portal Masters when they pit Skylander against Skylander.  I am fully aware of that, but I take a slightly different approach, one that I believe has an even greater basis of support, but perhaps from the silent majority.

The New Issue: No PvP in Trap Team

The last month or so, almost every comment and message I have received was built around "What are you most excited for in Trap Team," or "Who do you think will be your favorite Skylander in Trap Team."  I actually began a list when I got the full size Trap Team poster at TRU and plan to actually line item them out.  However,  the last week or so that shifted to, "Holy Greebles!  What are your thoughts on there not being Battle Mode/PvP in Trap Team?"

I was kind of taken back when I saw that...

I've maintained a pretty solid "1P vs CPU" stance on Battle Mode, just like I've kept the same "LightCore Sermon" position (which is the next video in this series, lol).  In fact, one of the ideas I pitched at E3 this year was how to improve Battle Mode.  I want to make clear that I never suggest it be done away with completely, and I also need to stress my opinion could carry VERY little weight with the folks behind the game.  I'd actually err more on that side than thinking it was partially important, but who knows.  At this point in time I am left hoping that something similar to what I pitched actually becomes a reality, and hopefully before Christmas or late Spring.  Before I expand on that, let me address the question, "What are your thoughts about no battle mode in Trap Team?"

No Battle Mode in Trap Team: My Thoughts

In all honesty, I am pretty devastated.  As much as I wanted to see it change, Battle Mode is the #1 way my Nephew and I play Skylanders together.  We battle Kaos and sometimes play a random chapter, but for the most part when he is over and wants to play Skylanders it is always PvP.  Despite all the other options and Arena Challenges that have been added in, his #1 request is simply PvP.

I also know, despite how much the vocal fan base pushed for "online" battles, they never dreamed they'd have nothing in its place.

This is a big loss (assuming it is true...I've not seen anything to substantiate it, but haven't seen anyone rushing out to debunk it...I feel like if this was a rumor and NOT true, PR would be sending out word that people need to relax, Battle Mode is there with the Doom Challenge etc, and will be even better than last year etc).  For many, this was your replay value.  There are not as many "100%ers" as you would think.  For many gamers, just getting to the end and defeating Kaos constitutes completion.  Many don't feel the need to max out their Portal Master Rank, grind thru levels, look for missing items, or obtain 3 Stars for every chapter.  However, what kept them playing, and what was a huge part of the franchise for everyone else was Battle Mode.

Here is a rough timeline of events with my Nephew and I:

SSA: "I'm Terrafin and you are Slam Bam...Let's see who wins!"  Shortly after that, "Dude, let's set up and record a 32 Skylander Tournament!"

Giants: "Are the Giants Newlanders, or SSA Castaways better? Tournament time!"

SWAP Force: "Can anyone beat Star Strike?"  "Let's do a series where 1 Skylander takes on 8-10 others in a row!"

Battle Mode, namely PvP was my Nephew's FAVORITE part of the game.  I loved it too.  I'll recap this with how I opened it...I am pretty sad to see it go and can only hope that the folks behind the game have good reason for this and something that will blow us all away.

What I Pitched at E3: Stand Alone Battle Game with DLC Expanions

So, prior to the pretty tragic news of Trap Team not having Battle Mode, this is what I pitched at E3.

I suggest there be a Stand Alone Game, pricced something like $19.99-$29.99 that had cool arenas, all the characters, DLC expansion for future games, and some key upgrades...

1. Single Player Battle Mode with Adjustable Difficulty

I was totally honest with them...I can only play Battle Mode when my Nephew is here.  My other option is turning on another controller and either doing turn-based PvP where a single battle lasts 15 minutes, or just obliterate a pre-selected character to test out moves, complete quests, etc.

My suggest was to build this stand alone game on the Single Player dynamic.  I honestly think they expected to hear me say, "Online or die" based on their shock, but I truly believe all great games are built first and foremost around the single player experience.

Does anyone know how much content I would have on my channel if I could play 1P vs CPU in Skylanders Battle Mode?  I would literally take each character and run them thru the gauntlet against every other character.  I would record tournaments, I would upload Giant throwdowns, and 16 slot SWAP Force brackets.  It would be EPIC!

The current set up doesn't allow me to do that short of the RPG style battle which I don't think anyone would enjoy.

If you think, "Okay, that is good, but I'd kill the opponent..." Um, no.  Just like the game has Easy-Nightmare, I suggested this have similar difficulty modes ,or ranks like in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.  If you come in and Level 5 Ninjini obliterates you, you can turn down the difficulty, or practice till you beat her.  Once you can take her down, bump her up a level.  It is the fundamental of all fighting games imo...

2. Keep and Expand the Classic Local Player Battles

Just because I want to battle a CPU Skylader doesn't mean I want to forego battling my Nephew.  I suggested that mode be kept in tact, but expanded.

3: Local 4 Player Battles

This is the expansion on the 2P.  I know the argument I would get for pushing 1P vs CPU is, "But this is a family game...it is meant to be enjoyed by friends, or kids and their parents etc."  Boom....Trump Card!  I fully acknowledge that...My Nephew and I are proof of how well that works.  However, what do other fighting games offer?  4 Players able to engage locally.  So now, instead of it being Sibling vs Sibling, the parents can get in on the action.  You can have Father & Daughter vs Mother & Son.

I also stressed how it should allot for 2 friends to be able to come in and battle against 2 CPUs etc.  Whatever the format, 1P vs CPU, 1P vs 2P, 1P & 2P vs 3P & 4P, 1P vs CPU1, CPU2, and CPU 3, it needs to allot for everything from a sole, individual player to 4 congregated players.

I didn't go into this, bu that can be made even better by allowing 1P-2P-3P-4P to battle 4 CPUs.  The options are really limitless and the more immersive, the better.

4. Tournaments/Brackets

This is another no-brainer in a dedicated fighting game.  You need to be able to do more than just a solo battle.  You need to be able to create Tournaments and progress through each round.  This would be HUGE.

5. Other Modes

I didn't mention this, but things like having a King of the Hill, or Gauntlet type modes where you pit your favorite Skylander against the rest would be awesome.

6. In-Game Roster

This was also not included in what I pitched, but I think the game would be well served to have  an archived record of your collection.  Basically meaning that when you put Terrafin and S3 Mega Ram Spyro on the portal, they are there on a roster for you to select from. Essentially, this would allow you to play as Terrafin and earn XP while going thru your roster of Skylanders to spice up the battles, or practice specific techniques.

I also think this aspect could be expanded to allow for those with a limited collection to battle Skylanders they don't own.  What I mean by this is that you have Mega Ram Spyro and Big Bang Trigger Happy.  We will say you don't have Star Strike.  The game would allow you to select to battle her as a CPU.  This would let you get a feel for old and new characters that might not be in your collection and ultimately encourage you to add them!  It is a win-win imo.

7. DLC

I know I am 95% of the time against DLC, but hear me out.  I want to pay the reasonable price for this stand alone game.  However I, you, and anyone else with any sense doesn't want to spring $30 for a new "Skylanders Battle:: ___ Edition" each year.  How do you rectify that? DLC.

When Skylanders 5 drops they can offer up the new character roster, new arenas, and honestly whatever other expansions they want.  Keep the price right (Say $10) and people will eat it up.  We are already buying the new Skylanders to use in the new game, so this would just add them to the Battle roster etc.

This DLC literally allows your initial purchase to be expanded on annually.  If they are loosing players, DLC can come along with new battle modes, etc.

8. Online

I am not about to poll people for what they want and not take it to heart.  While I would be ecstatic and content with what I have described above, I know an awful lot of you want online battle mode.  I have to admit, it would be cool.  Personally, I would rather have Single Player vs CPU first, but this is a step in the right direction from that foundation.

I honestly believe the biggest concern with "online" is keeping the environment kid friendly.  This is hard to do without nerfing interaction...ie no chat, no text, etc.

I think, for what it is worth, that quest is being made a little too difficult.  Nintendo has managed social gaming and online interactions quite well, and while it hasn't been perfect there are easy ways to make this function and not hold up a stellar addition to the franchise.

Mario Kart Wii didn't have voice chat, it didn't offer up a blank slate and keyboard, it had pre-selected messages like, "Great Race!" "Last One!," "Let's Race Bikes" etc...While it isn't super sleek or modern, it would work while something better could be hashed out.

Conclusion

I pitched this idea because I truly believe in it...I think it is 100% the way to go.  In light of the recent revelations that there won't be a a Battle Mode in Trap Team, I think it is seriously worth considering.  One thing I tried to convey while pitching this is that people would pay for the stand alone game if it was well executed, patched, updated, and included the DLC to update rosters etc.

I have no qualms continuing to pay $75 for the main entry.  You are getting a game, Portal, and 2-3 figures, or in the case of Trap Team 2 Figures and 2 Traps.  That is basically $25-$35 on the figures, and puts the game right in line with others at $49-59.

Make the stand alone battle game priced at $19.99, or $29.99 and then offer the annual $9.99 roster update (as opposed to a new game at $30 again), and offer up some other reasonably priced arenas, or misc. items for cheap and I think it is a no brainer.

The game can feature more content like the Bonus Mission Maps, or longer levels and then the battle mode can be built around a more robust and typical layout for a fighting game.

I think it would be the best course of action for the main game, battle mode, and franchise as a whole.  I am just one guy, but I have spent a lot of time playing Skylanders the last three years, feel I have a good feel for what the community wants, and have the unique vantage point of being an older, regular player while seeing first hand what my Nephew makes of things.  I think this is the way to go, especially with the sad news that the Battle Mode we have come to expect the first three installments has fallen to the wayside.

As always, let me know your thoughts.  Are you in the "Online" or bust camp?  Do you agree with me that the heart of the game should be built around the single player?  Would you purchase a well executed stand-alone, battle mode game for Skylanders?

Skylanders Trap Team at E3: Your Questions Answered Part 1

Well, this had the best of intentions and didn't turn out so well...

Instead of going with things by category etc, I thought it would be cool to address the questions as posed by the individual.  Yes, I knew there would be overlap.  I did not, however, anticipate it would consume around 80 minutes of time.  I know you are just looking at a pool table, but each 20 mins or so is roughly 4 GB in the 1280x720 format.  So, the roughly 80 minutes is around 15-16 GB.  This would take a LOOONG time to render and upload.

So, for now, I have broken off the start and the first few questions (which happened to be my own questions).  Below the video I will have kind of a text transcript.  I am not sure if I will run with what I have already recorded and break it down by individual, or if I would be better off starting from scratch and then doing a "shout out" to everyone who submitted questions.  Whatever I do, you will see, I'm just not set in stone yet.

That said, Part 1 is, so here you go...

Skylanders Trap Team at E3 Your Questions Answered, Part 1: My Questions

Here is a text version if you prefer that...Not verbatim, but I do a rough recap on the question, response, and what my take is from that...

Console

Q1:  Will there be a difference between the Toys for Bob and Beenox versions of the game?

A1:  We are not talking about that

My Take: The demos were Wii U and PS4, which are both by Beenox.   Toys for Bob is handling the Wii/360/PS3 versions and Beenox will handle the ports to Wii U/XB1/PS4.  We had differences in SWAP Force and I’m curious if the games will play the same in terms of cutscenes and collectibles on the previous gen consoles AND if the Beenox versions will have anything "extra."

Q2: Will the Wii U still utilize the GamePad screen for Character Stats?

A2: We are not ready to talk about that.

My Take:  Harmless info imo…Maybe they are going to tout “off screen” gameplay as a selling point and wanted to wait it out.  I hope they retain something special for the GamePad.

3DS

Q3:  Will the 3DS Starter Pack incorporate different characters?  Also, will one be exclusive to the Starter Pack?

A3: We are not talking about the 3DS version of the game.

My Take:  Kind of surprised they couldn't at least confirm/deny the same set up as past games.

Q4: Will the 3DS version still feature the character roster found in SWAP Force?

A4: See above…No comments at all on 3DS questions.

My Take:  Confirming this at E3 would have been very nice and really spoils nothing.  It was the single most important advancement in the handheld entries in my opinion.

GamePlay

Q5:  How many villains can be held per crystal?

A5: One. 1.  Only One.  Just one.

My Take: Finally confirmation, but it does pose some other issues.

Q6: Is it possible in 2P Mode to both play as a villain?

A6: No comment.

My Take: Sadly, based on “1 per Trap” and only having one crystal slot on the portal, I have to say this will not happen.  Things may change, but with 1 per trap, you’d have an odd situation on hand.

Q7: Will there be a Single Player Battle Mode (ie P1 as Terrafin vs CPU as Slam Bam)?

A7:  I got, “We can’t talk about that,” “Ask PR,” and a few “No” responses.   Leads me to believe it will be a no go for Trap Team.  More on why I asked this later.

My Take: Pretty much what I expected.  Solo Battle Mode (Skylander vs Skylander by way of a CPU) is the natural precursor to anything online and in my opinion make the most sense.  One of the purported reasons for a lack of “online” is protecting the young audience.  What is the best way to do that and ensure no one is exposed to anything bad online?  Use a CPU!  I’ll elaborate more on this later.

Q8: Is there a special role for Giants and Swappers in Trap Team?

A8: No.

My Take: Quite surprising.  Even though Giants didn’t do much in SWAP Force, you were at least inclined to pick them up and open a chest…Kind of a nice nod to the past and incentive to keep them handy and continue to play as the past characters for more reasons than just wanting to…

Shockingly, the reason for this goes back to focus groups with the kids.  They found kids wanted to play with the “new” figures and characters, not their old figures.  So, with the emphasis on focus groups, there will be no special areas or reasons to specifically use your Giants and Swappers.  That said, since the game is fully backward compatible, you can still play as Tree Rex or Free Ranger just because you want to, or because they are your favorites.

Q9: Please bring back the original SSA Castaways (not a question, but I don’t care).

A9: We aren’t talking about character rosters, or reposes.

My Take: Last year I was able to get a “Yes, you will see some of them (Castaways),” which would have totally been fine with me…I don’t expect to get a “Oh yeah man…S2 TripWire Voodood, S2 Skull Master Ghost Roaster, and wait till you see S2 Fright Rider” etc…

The tight lips in that regard, kept me from pursuing a request or teaser for any other reposes, be they S2, S3 (Jet-Vac, Pop Fizz), or S4 (Spyro, Trigger Happy, etc).

Off camera, with several different folks, I did at least ask about reposed Giants (Swarm, Crusher) or SWAP Force Skylanders (Boom Jet, Night Shift, etc.).  The answer was the same as above…no comment on any character info.

What concerns me is that I heard the Trap Masters referred to as “Guest Stars” multiple times.  I also heard a few people call Giants and Swappers “Guest Stars.”  This leads me to the assumptive conclusion that at this point, all of the “gimmick” Skylanders are viewed as just that, “Guest Stars.”  So while Spyro, Gill Grunt, and others that catch on like Jet-Vac and Pop Fizz might get a near annual repose, the “Guest Stars” are likely to remain one trick ponies.  The good news is, of course, if you love Bouncer and Spy Rise you can always continue to play them in new releases.  The bad news is, at this point in time, it seems highly unlikely that we would see S2 Eye-Brawl, or S2 Magna Charge.  Maybe they don’t want to tip their hand, but I had NEVER heard “Guest Star” until this year.  The “Core” Skylanders are referred to as “Legacy” Skylanders by high end people and “fan favorites” by the more grounded spokes people…Seems sad so many great characters could just be “one and done.”  That said, one thing that is clear is they never seem to rule anything out.

Q10: If LightCores still exist, will you give them WowPows or a recharge of the Flash Bomb?
A10: No comment, or not commenting on character specifics.

My Take: I did it.  I gave my “LightCore Sermon” to around 4 different people…I think it seemed to resonate well with at least two of them.  I think it is no secret that the LightCores have not sold as intended, particularly when they are of a reposed character (ie not BRAND NEW).  My sermon kind of highlights those reasons.  For those who have somehow not heard my rant, cough sermon, here are the cliff notes:
--LightCores are great in that they are a unique pose and have a Light Up Effect
---It is all downhill from there
--They do not have a WowPow, which makes them weaker than their counterparts (when applicable, ie S2).
---LightCore figures MUST have a WowPow and the ability to switch paths (outside of brand new LCs).
--The Flash Bomb is auto initiated right upon loading into the game…and it can not be recharged
---The Flash Bomb should be user executed and rechargeable via set XP, or time intervals

Q11: Will there be Adventure Packs or Battle Packs?

A11: We are not talking about that at this time.

MyTake:  Really?  You can’t even give a tease of an answer, something like, “They may be back, but not like you are used to seeing them.”  I think the APs are far more sought after than the BPs, and personally I liked the 4 APs in SSA the best.  Giants offered 2 and 2, just like SF, but to me that APs deliver the good with extra content (ie a Chapter), cool and unique stories with memorable non-playable characters, and they have had great Skylanders packaged in (cough, SSA’s 4 APs, cough).

I thought we would at least get a, “Yeah you will see them” and maybe even a “We have 2 Adventure Packs and 2 Battle Packs once again” etc.  No such luck.  Last year I got this info from the Vicarioius Visions guys.

Q12: Is the portal wired?  Is there a volume control?  And will the new portal work with the old games?

A12: Yes.  Yes.  Yes.

My Take:  Makes sense to be wired, but I wanted to double check…I saw it first hand.  I never did find the volume control on my own (the booths were very dark so you could record gameplay I believe), but 2 people told me there was a separate volume control on the portal.  It took some digging, like last year, but I finally got confirmation that the portal will work with the older games.   This question seems to take people by surprise till I explain, “You know, the SF Portal worked for SSA and Giants, so you just had to keep one out…discounting the Trap portion etc, will the Traptanium Portal be able to be plugged in and load up characters in SWAP Force etc.”

Who knows, maybe I confused the person that said yes, but once I explained it and laid out I wasn’t expecting the Traps or sounds to work, they were quick to say, “Yeah, you can just use the one portal for all the games.”  So for those who like being tidy, this is welcome news!

Skylanders Trap Team E3 Booth Tour: New Skylanders and Traps!

This video is just kind of a quick showcase of the available Skylanders and Traps at the Trap Team after hours event.  I started out booth hopping (each one had slightly different characters), but then one of the really cool ladies working brought in several of the other figures for me, including the illusive Gearshift!  I also got a size comparison between the Trap Team Newlanders and Trap Masters.  Check it out for yourself and stay tuned for more Trap Team E3 Coverage!

Some cool stuff here is just getting a look at each of the featured characters and the Traps on hand.  The hardcore fans will no doubt like that video thumbnail as it shows my size comparison between Chopper + Food Fight vs Krypt King.  Wallop, if you haven't heard, is the heaviest Skylander I believe I've ever laid hands on...Krypt King was rumored to spit out a swarm of beetles, or bees by many, but during the private screening of the game, one of the guys running the demo said it was a swarm of locusts...That makes perfect sense given his name and aesthetics (especially the back side!).

For those interested, I will also have the size comparison up as a still image in the near future...I also "think" I have still shots of each character as well as some group shots.  Stay tuned for so much more from E3!!

Skylanders Trap Team E3 Kaos "Holy Trap!" T-Shirt

While treasure hunters will no doubt covet their E3 Life Element Trap pre-loaded with in-game variant villain Riot Shield Shredder, I was honestly more excited by a simple t-shirt.  And yes, I am serious.  The trap is cool and I'm excited to use it, but at this point in time I was more excited to see the packaging and backside.

The Kaos T-shirt however was totally unexpected and it is easily one of the greatest shirts I have ever seen.  I didn't even look at it until later in the night at the hotel, but instantly brought me to a loud cheer, lol.  I pushed last year for "adult sized" merchandise and throught this past calendar year I never saw anything.  There are tons of cool kids shirts, but nothing for adults...not even generic logo t-shirts etc.  Needless to say, I was stoked to land this thing!

A First Look at the Most Epic Skylanders Shirt Ever: Kaos' "Holy Trap!"

I have no idea if it is exclusive to E3, a quick print for a laugh, or something that might hit shelves, but I do know it is awesome and countless of you would purchase this thing if it was on a shelf.  That said, here and on the video I want you to post up what you would like to see in terms of adult sized merchandise.  Do you want basic t-shirts, do women want tank tops, does anyone want hats etc.  I have no guarantee this will go anywhere, but I'm also the only person trying to get it somewhere...So post up what you want and maybe, just maybe, we can convince the folks at Activision to license some adult merchandise, or let potential licensees know there IS a market for adult sized Skylander swag!

Skylanders Trap Team Demo and Q&A with Jin, Senior Producer

Well, my strategy for E3 was simple this year...use the limited time to get in as much info and gameplay on Trap Team as possible.  wdrumz, CrystalBlazier, pdiddysportscards, and myself quickly realized we had no chance of getting thru the Trap Team lines at the official Skylanders booth before we'd go up for the screening...

Thus, I went with backup plan and pdiddysportscards (Paul) was smart, or dumb enough to think it sounded like a good idea too...Luckily, the plan worked out flawlessly and we not only got some early hands-on with the game, we wound up with a Senior Producer for the game that really knew his stuff!

As such, not only was I able to capture some gameplay via Paul's work on the Wii U, but we got some early answers and a reality check into how much was going to remain withheld.  Jin did an awesome job with the demo and the rather intense Q&A given he probably didn't have dedicated Portal Masters like us too often.  Had I have known what all was off limits I wouldn't have hit him up with so many questions, lol...He is literally the first person we had the chance to talk to...

Skylanders Trap Team at E3 Exclusive Interview with Executive Producer Scott Krager

Hey Everyone,

Here is an exclusive interview I got with the Executive Producer behind the Skylanders series, Scott Krager!  He was kind enough to let me take up about 10 minutes of his time and I tried to highlight a few key points, pick up on his favorite new characters, and gain insights from his perspective.

I totally apologize for the bobbing camera...I'm not a vlogger and apparently I don't make for a great tripod...Sometimes we clip a little hair, or the chin, but the audio still came thru great and that is what really matters.  I tried to stand beside the camera to get closer to him to ensure we could hear his voice...that to me is an okay trade off, lol.  If I am fortunate enough to attend next year, I think the tripod will be coming.

That said, I was able to get confirmation from him on pricing for the line up (Single Traps, Core Skylanders, and Trap Masters) and he confirmed what I learned earlier from Jin.

Scott was also kind enough to give a shout out to my Nephew (thewalkthruking) and offer up his take on his 2 favorite Sklyanders, Slam Bam and Freeze Blade!

Here is a text-based accompaniment to the interview:

E3 Scott Krager
-Senior Producer

At this point I knew what was off limits and just opted for info that could be released.  Trust me,  I asked everyone, including him, right before this interview…and then kept asking thru the evening.

His favorite Trappable Villain: Painyatta
His favorite Trapmaster: Wallop (who btw is the HEAVIEST I have ever held)
His favorite Core: Chopper (with gyro-dino-exo suit)

Price Points
-Starter Pack: $74.99
-Individual Traps: $5.99
-Core: $9.99
-Trap Masters: $14.99
--Battle edge with Skylands Most Wanted AND interaction with Traptanium Clusters
---They were referred to multiple times here and in other conversations as “guest stars”

-Tried it again, but NO INFO on Battle Packs or Adventure Packs
-I went for info on an 8 Pack of Traps: they are considering everything
--For me an 8 Pack is highly desirable, especially since it should knock the price down some

-What does the crowd at E3 mean to you?
--He has been here since Spyro’s Adventure, and says it is one of the highlights of his 20+ year career in the industry.  He values the professional success, but enjoys seeing his kids interact with the game at his personal, family level.

-Castaways
--I knew we would get nothing info wise, but I did get confirmation that even our forgotten guys like Voodood, Ghost Roaster, Dino-Rang, and Sunburn would get jump attacks, even if they stay molded in their debut forms…I’ll take the small victory for those of you who have their favorites invested in the old cast.

-Trapped Villains
--1 Per Trap (this is absolutely how it works, not 4 per trap as so many reported early on)
--Each villain has their own theme song to add personality

-My Nephew (had to get him a shout out and Scott’s insights on his favorite)
--Slam Bam, Scott loved his concept and unique design
--Freeze Blade, Vicarious Visions came up with him and he likes the leeway the Water Element affords in ice and is very well rounded

-Trap Team October 5th
--Will we see a gradual release of info approaching launch?
---He thinks so

I had a ton of tough questions, but I sadly knew they would be met with the same guarded reply and that honestly would have made for a bad interview.  Thus, I tried to focus on the positives, get his personal favorites and take on the series development as the Executive Producer.  I couldn't pass up the chance to get my Nephew’s questions regarding his favorite Skylanders covered with a personal recap, so I opted for that as well, lol.  So, if you also like Slam Bam and Freeze Blade, you got some nice bonus content.

The assumed approach of a gradual release of info is likely correct.  I think they wanted to keep the focus on what is "New" and "Innovative" at E3, and then likely reveal some more, gradually over time.

Skylanders Trap Team E3 2014 Experience

Coming Soon!

I have so many people that just ask, "What is E3 like?" and "What is it like getting to go?" coupled with things along the lines of, "Did you see Rob from Coin-Op TV?" and "Did you meet any other YouTubers?"  that I have opted to just make a stand alone video kind of running you thru the paces of what it is like to get to attend E3 from a pretty modest background.

Again, without your support and a really good PR team at Activision, I would be covering E3 from home, via second hand sources.  I would have no chance to ask direct questions, or get answers and insights from the people behind the game.

Many thanks to those behind the scenes and who remain relatively unsung heroes for orchestrating everything, getting Portal Masters from across the country to E3, and then setting things up to run so smooth for everyone at the event and who then go above and beyond to make it even more fun and memorable for everyone involved.

Similarly, a great thanks to everyone who follows along here on the site, watches the videos on YouTube, interacts with me on social media, and who posed questions from all those sources and forums like DarkSpyro.

I am keeping this video generic and kind of down to covering the overall experience...All my usual intricate details will be up in other videos.  Bottom line getting to attend E3 is a big honor and tons of fun.  The fact that you have folks behind the scenes working to make it more fun and get to meet some fellow Portal Masters, company brass, and those who work directly on the game just make it icing on the cake!

Skylanders Trap Team at E3: What Do You Want to Know?

Hey Everyone,

Pretty big news for you...

I have once again been afforded the privilege of getting to attend E3 to check out the latest Skylanders entry, Skylanders Trap Team!!

Skylanders Trap Team at E3: What Do You Want to Know?

I am very excited for this game, have tons of questions myself, and can't wait to learn more about all aspects of the game: figures, packaging, price points, gameplay, removed and returning in-game elements, WowPows, and much, much more!

That said, what I want to know from you is simply what you want to know.

You can leave questions here on this post, on the above YouTube video, via Twitter, Facebook, Google +, e-mail, whatever medium works best for you.  I realize that without your support, I likely wouldn't be able to attend E3 and get the honor of relaying the news and information back to the Skylanders community...So thank you!

I can't guarantee all questions can be asked, or more importantly answered, but I will do my sincere best to make it happen.  I went info heavy last year covering Swap Force...I can do the same this year, or if you would prefer, I can work more on recording some gameplay etc.  I hope to have a nice balance of both, but I will definitely take advantage of any opportunity I have to really cash in on any element of the game, be it recording gameplay or picking the brain of the developers.

If you will be attending E3 as well let me know!  I'll spend most of my time covering the Skylanders side of things, but it is always great to meet other Portal Masters from here and abroad!

Similarly, if there is something else you would like to see just let me know.  I can't quite explain how easy it is to get lost/misdirected at the convention center, and several times last year I just came upon something pretty awesome without intending to do so, lol.  That said, the main focus will no doubt be Trap Team and I can not wait to learn more about the game!

Thanks again for your support and thanks to the folks at Activision for trusting me to attend E3 and deliver solid, fun information back to you, the Skylanders fanbase!

I will keep an archive of the questions here and will literally have it with me on my iPad to pose to anyone willing to answer, or share what information is available.

Best Moments of 2013: What Were Your Favorites?

It is hard to believe that yet another year has flown by and we are on the doorstep of 2014. That said, what were some of your favorite moments of 2013?  This could be gaming related, family, career, personal, stemming from another hobby etc., accomplishments, just anything you enjoyed or are proud of completing.

Feel free to post them up in the comments section below!

For me it would have to be going to E3 and that entire experience (getting to meet with folks from Activision, PowerA, Vicarious Visions, other YouTubers...having early access to all the content that I had just had to watch from online in previous years and then being able to report it back to you, straight from the source), being able to see the Nintendo setup first hand, getting StreetPass tags from all over the place, and just being able to mine and search for insights on Skylanders SWAP Force from the people that know it best.

Tying in with that was seeing the Pacific Ocean (first time seeing any ocean mind you!) and I'm also pretty sure as I was trying to figure out how to get back to the bus that would run back to the hotel I saw Jenna Marbles, but I can't 100% confirm that.

On the gaming front it would likely be continuing to share Skylander content with everyone, seeing the Wii U come back this holiday season to spite the naysayers, landing Street Pass Tags with the expanded Nintendo Zone coverage, playing extensive amounts of Minecraft with my Nephew, and diving in to both Animal Crossing New Leaf and the Xbox One.

Personally, I won a pretty big, nation-wide contest relating to another of my hobbies which was a really cool experience.

I also had a few other neat trips, was fortunate enough to attend another Cowboys game (which they won fyi), and then of course a few other accomplishments and good times.

But enough about me...What were some of your best moments of 2013?  I hope you all enjoyed this current year and are ready to start the New Year and make the most of it as well!

Skylanders Swap Force at E3: Your Questions Answered

Well, this has been a long time coming, BUT I will mention that I cranked out a blog post after getting back to the hotel from E3...Literally just a few hours after witnessing everything first hand...Here is a link to that post: http://www.1ofwiisdom.com/2013/06/skylanders-swap-force-at-e3-digging.html

You can essentially consider this the video counterpart...Again, I personally find text based versions easier to skim for info, but I know many prefer video formats, so here you go:

The good news is this...I still have a green light to ask more questions!

I already have the list of unanswered questions from prior to E3, as well as some more things I've come up with, and I'm starting to see a lot of debate on some issues we could seek clarification on...

Keep in mind, some of the info will likely not be released until right before launch (if at all), but it certainly doesn't hurt to ask...I'f you've got anything you still want to know, feel free to post up and let me know.  I will forward it on and see what happens.

I can't promise we will get a response, but I can't say we won't either...Bottom line, if you ask it I will do my best to get an answer.

The folks behind the scenes are great and truly care about those of us on the fan side of the spectrum, but there is simply some stuff that can't be revealed etc...After all, what fun is playing a game for the first time if you already know EVERYTHING?

That said, we can shoot to know some things ;)  If I get answers back I will make additional videos highlighting the fresh information.  Stay tuned!

Skylanders Swap Force E3 2013: Inside the Booth Highlights

This video is a compilation of the highlights from inside the official Activision Skylanders Swap Force Booth.

It is a collection of character shots, looks at the intro screens, and discussion with developers and staffers revealing cool information.

The intro covers things VERY well, subsequently it is quite long...So, I have provided the Time Chart to help you skip to where you want to be in the video:

Pre-Intro: Start - 2:52
Introduction 2:52 - 13:52
Activision Screen: 13:53 - 14:52
Swap Force Booth Wii U Character Intro Screens: 14:53 - 18:37
Quick Look at Characters: 18:38 - 21:30
Discussion with Karthik, CEO of Vicarious Visions: 21:31 - 26:44
Skimming for Characters: 26:45 - 29:17
Conclusion: 29:18 - 37:52

Hopefully you enjoy the video and first hand look.  E3 was an awesome experience and a great time...

The lighting and background commotion conspire to make clear shots a little tough to come by, but you get the feel for everything...I have a few still images I'll get up on the blog (or maybe even a video) soon...

Random Skylanders Swap Force Clips from Nintendo's Booth at E3

As the title implies, this is really just a conglomeration of three quick clips shot at the Nintendo Booth's Swap Force demo...

I was loaded down with stuff at this point and this is where I shot the gameplay for wdrumz on his camera.

I had a little downtime and used my free hand to shot a few clips...If you don't want the voice intro explanation, just skip ahead to roughly 6:10 for the clips themselves.

You get a feel for a few key things:

-The look of the portal
-Wii U Controls
-Night Shift background
-Night Buckler
-Fish Fishing Bonus Mission
-Insights on How to Win Hot Dog

I will get a similar, but better, compilation of Swap Force vids from the actual Activision Swap Force Booth up tomorow!

Skylanders Swap Force 3DS Big Improvements Revealed at E3

This is big news...

Really big news...Super convenient news.

News that makes the exclusive Eruptor, Rattle Shake and Free Ranger perks of the 3DS Starter Pack even better!

Nintendo 3DS Owners and Skylander fans everywhere will appreciate this one:

At the Swap Force Booth one of the first things I learned was regarding Swap Force on the 3DS...

Archive Your Entire Collection

I saw Elemental Logos lining both the Left Hand and Right Hand sides of the touch screen (lower half).  I assumed this was so we could have one Skylander of each element stored in the game, making our lives so much easier.

I was wrong...Pleasantly wrong.

The guy running the 3DS demo was super cool...He was just as into Skylanders as those of us who were brought out to attend E3 and check things out first hand!  We had a lot of good conversation, but when I commented how cool it was we could have one of each element he calmly corrected me, "No, not just one...the entire collection!"

I thought he was joking, but soon realized by the proud smile he was serious.  I asked "All of them?"  And he said, "All of them."  I think he was as excited to share the news with another 3DS gamer as I was to learn it...

The only real drawback and downside to the 3DS version was having to switch characters for the elemental bonus and each level etc.  While it was cool to have the "oh, you need Magic and Earth for special areas in this level" I would much rather just enter the level, find the hidden area, and swap instantly to whatever element I need...Having the ability to pick from any character is just that much better...I'm still shocked by this one!

After recording, he did caution he wasn't 100% sure it applied to EVERYTHING, but I kept that in mind and asked 2 other VERY HIGH UP people and they confirmed what he said...If there are any issues (no Legendary or in-game variants showing up etc) they are unaware.

Swap Force Selectability: Your New Power Really Is Choice

Gotta say, once again I am very impressed.  Activision and n-Space nailed it here.  If you have all 16 Swap Force Characters you can simply cycle through the list of your collection and select combination 249 of 256 and jump back into the game...No portal, no fumbling around with halves of a character, just simple and user friendly touch screen selectability!

Same Length, Different Story

When I asked about the length and different story line I was told it would be roughly the same length as past 3DS entries and that the story line would once again be completely different from the console version.

I am looking forward to getting my hands on Swap Force 3DS...and I can not wait to register the collection to the game and go about truly enjoying the visuals and gameplay after equipping my 3DS for the ultimate journey!

Conclusion

It is 6 AM and I am beat...that said, just typing this out got me excited...I can't believe we get to archive our ENTIRE collection to the 3DS!  It is going to be awesome!  Thanks to Activision and n-Space for coming through with a great improvement!

What Happens When You Just Put Half of a Swap Force Skylander on the Portal of Power?

One of the questions posed for me to investigate at E3 was, "What happens if you just put part of a Swap Force Skylander on the Portal?"

At first I thought it wasn't a good question and pictured a screen either telling you to up a character on, or saying you there is an error etc.

However, the more I thought about it, the more it bothered me...I didn't just want to know what would really happen, I needed to know.

Personally, I had grown akin to the concept of having the selected half stumble about on screen looking for the missing half...This was well received by a few people I ran it by...but the developers had a different take.

Their vision, particularly with the regular testing from kids, is to keep it simple.  Kids like to switch characters a lot and they didn't want anything like that to distract them from getting back to the game itself (ie focus on seeing what happens with all the different parts etc).

However, I still think it would have been pretty cool, regardless of how pointless it might be...

In the video we investigate things with Hoot Loop and Wash Buckler...We had Loop not registering...Added Wash to make a registering Wash Loop...and then pulled Loop and made Wash "stand" solo, but to no avail.

The game simply asks you to put a character on the portal.

Still, we now know the true answer and I can sleep easier at night..It really was a pretty good question and I am on the record as being partial to the idea of having something funny happen.

I've got a lot more exclusive E3 Swap Force content headed your way!

Skylanders Swap Force at E3: Digging Deep and Answering Your Questions

Here it is...2 AM just inland of the Pacific Ocean...it is 4 AM back home, and I am heading out in just a few short hours.  That said, I wanted to get some of this information up for you to take in...I have much more on tap AND hope to learn even more.  That said, here is something to tide you over...I'll basically be out of commission all day Wednesday due to travel etc.  We will start with the obvious and go from there...

Starter Pack Characters

Console

Wii, Wii U, PS3, PS4, 360, Xbox One
-Of Note: Swap Force will be a day one (ie launch day) title available for both PS4 and Xbox One

Wash Buckler, Water Element, Swap Force
Blast Zone, Fire Element, Swap Force
Ninja Stealth Elf, Life Element, Series 3

3DS

Free Ranger, Air Element Swap Force
Rattle Shake, Undead Element Swap Force
Volcanic Eruptor, Fire Element, Series 2

*I am going to go out on a limb and call this as I see it.  Volcanic Eruptor, is in my mind, a Starter Pack Exclusive for the 3DS. I view him just as I do Dark Spyro and Punch Pop Fizz, basically an in-game variant. I say this because while at E3 I uncovered Lava Barf Eruptor...same look, different colors (again think Dark Spyro and Punch Pop Fizz).

**Sidenote: Pretty sure this means you can expect to see not only a few more in-game variants (Granite Crusher, Jade Flashwing, etc), but chase variants as well...They have really become a part of the series.  I am going to be seeking verification of this and info on any Sidekicks and Legendaries, both of which I personally still expect we will see.

Portal of Power

This one proved quite tough to answer, but I did get word that the portal would work in SSA and Giants.  The new portal is very sleek and I am particularly fond of the arched and lighted cutaways.

Characters

New Character Info

There are so many pics and videos involved in this I am going to hold out and might just update the SF Character List post, although I'll likely still highlight what I saw at E3 with a video and post...Several are still unknown to us at this point, name wise anyway.

Legacy Characters

This is a term I heard by several folks higher up the chain and in the behind closed doors demo.  This does not refer to "Legendary" Skylanders, but rather established and returning characters!  Contrary to what some have and continue to profess...Activision has full intentions of keeping your PREVIOUS Skylanders up and running.  They realize it is an investment and that now, at this point, each successive series will bring new elements and experiences to the table.  They are truly on the consumers side here...Granted, they will continue to innovate and make you want the latest and greatest, but your old Series 1 Spyro will still be there right along this year's S3...fully functional and playable.  They almost view them like the elder statesman...they just deserve respect.

The Fate of the Castaways: They will be back...at least some of them!!

New Series 2 Characters (ie Blizzard Chill) will receive a Wow Pow!  And yes, that is "Blizzard" Chill.  Apparently, from this, we can take that each individual Skylander will be classed as a "Series #" to distinguish their successive repose.  So, while we have Series 3 Spyro, this is a Series 2 Chill, and a new character like Countdown is in his Series 1 trim for Swap Force.  That also leads me to believe that any reposed Castaway, let's just pick Camo would be labeled accordingly and be a Series 2 for Swap Force since it is his 2nd repose.  And no, I have no proof of Camo, I just picked him as an example.

Series 3 Character's old Wow Pow is gone, but replaced with a newer, more powerful Wow Pow!

Will there be any Adventure Packs?

Yes, there will be 2 New Adventure Packs.  As best I learned it will be a location piece only.  I also believe one will involve Cali.

Will there be any Battle Packs?

Yes, there will be 2 New Battle Packs.  I would have to assume they would follow the same format as in Giants with a 2 Characters and possibly a Magic Item.

Game Play Questions

How Many Chapters are in the Game?

There will be 12 Chapters in Swap Force.  While chatting with the developers about this, they said things are  not pre-determined, but that 12 Chapters is what it took to play out the story line.

What is the Storyline?

Kaos is using his magic powers to turn good things bad...he has entirely decimated Cloudbreak Islands and our job is to rebuild and restore order to Skylands.

How Does Play Time Compare to Giants and Spyro's Adventure?

The play time is roughly the same, BUT with all the characters and combinations it has immense replay value!

What is the main hub of the game?

Woodburrow or Woodborough?  It is more of a setting, but it is the main hub.  I had a hard time hearing when I asked...I feel confident that is at least close to being correct.

Will the new Swap Force characters have more individual personalities?

Yes!  This was, as predicted, something the developers loved talking about...they spent a lot of time articulating everything.  Each and every character in the game will offer up more of a unique persona: different reactions, voices, and emotes are now involved via the D-Pad.  A very subtle, but incredibly cool trait mentioned is that characters will have their own way of letting you know that you are near something special..more on this later!

Will the Beenox version be the same as the other versions?

Yes!  Just not with the same graphics, which is only a big deal when you have seen the amazing graphics...it is that point you know what you are missing out on enjoying.

Will the 3DS version continue with a different story line?

Yes!

Oh, and the ultimate asset to 3DS gameplay is in store...If you are a 3DS owner you will likely know what this is..if not, stay tuned for a video!

Will there be a solo Battle Mode?

No, but there will be a Survivor Mode similar to Brock's Arena Challenges where you battle enemies.

Will there be any benefits to having Giants in the gameplay?

Yes!  More on this later!

Will fan favorites and established elements like Auric's Shop, Hats, Legendary Treasure, Story Scrolls, Treasure Chests, Battle Arenas, and Sky Stones be back?

Yes to some of this...more info soon.  For now, just now there will be a lot of hats!

What happens if you put only half of a Swap Force character on the portal?

I have found out...I will let you know by way of video!

Skylanders Mobile

Will there ever be Android versions?

I have the answer and will report back!

Skylanders Merchandise and Accessories

Here is what I know...there is a virtually limitless market for these products.

Power A is cranking out some ridiculously awesome stuff (that will be a stand alone post (or two, or three...it is that cool)).

Penguin was mentioned and one can only conjure that we will continue to see Skylander books etc.

I have a few questions on this matter that I plan to continue to investigate.

Conclusion

Well that is it for tonight ladies and gentleman, boys and girls...I have quite a bit of info I haven't released yet and some I may have been the only person to bother to investigate.  I can't stress enough how great Swap Force looked...I will go into greater detail back at the desk, er, um...pool table.
