Skylanders SuperChargers Launch Day
Well folks, it is finally here! Skylanders SuperChargers officially launches today in the US! I figured I would take this time to cover my plans for the video schedule and answer some other FAQs as of late.
Skylanders Trap Team Research
First off, I have frantically been working to complete the Skylanders Trap Team Research Series, see also Upgrades and Attack Damage, lol. I have actually done it, minus the Minis and a few others. You can see all of the upgrades here:
Skylanders Trap Team Research - Upgrades
Skylanders Trap Team Research - Villainography
Skylanders SuperChargers Blind Playthrough on YouTube, Coop Playthrough on Twitch
Next up, let's talk about my plans for SuperChargers!
With Trap Team, I did something no one else has done in Skylanders, at least on the YouTube front. Instead of doing my usual blind playthrough and directly uploading the videos to YouTube, I opted to do a "Blind Stream" of the game. I literally played thru the game blind via live streams on my Twitch Channel. The folks who checked it out really enjoyed it, and then of course I exported the videos over to YouTube. The end quality wasn't as good as usual due to the stream bit-rate restrictions, but it was still a lot of fun.
This year, I am going to go back to my old formula AND maintain the stream concept.
With the introduction of online gameplay (not just racing, but coop) I will do the following:
-Skylanders SuperChargers Blind Playthrough via Xbox One uploading to YouTube
AND
-Skylanders SuperChargers Coop Playthrough via Nintendo Wii U with viewers on Twitch
AND
-Skylanders SuperChargers Online Racing with Friends and Viewers -Stream and Upload
So, as you can see we have a diverse mix and I do indeed plan to play with some of you I have come to know over the past 4 titles in the Skylanders series!
If you haven't already done so, I encourage you to sign up on the Skylander Club Forum...you can connect with other Portal Masters and find friends to race with on your platform!

Skylanders SuperChagers Purchase Plans
Starter Packs
Now, this gets really interesting. We have more characters than ever in the Starter Packs, but we have a lot of duplicates. Here is my tentative plan
I have pre-ordered the Dark Edition for the Wii U.
I will get the 3DS Starter Pack.
I will get the Xbox One Starter Pack.
I really want Dark Bowser, but I'm trying to think of a way to justify the price of another Starter Pack...Ironically, if I had to pick 1 DK and 1 Bowser, I would want Dark Bowser and regular DK...funny how that goes.
If there is a good sale, and stock, I might spring for the Dark Wii Edition. I could always upload a playthrough of that game, but I honestly haven't seen anything of it...I would like to gauge my purchase on the more immersive 3DS game (you can race online while you can't on the Wii), but with scalpers AND amiibo fanatics on the prowl, this may be a hot commodity. I remember last year with Trap Team it was difficult to get a Wii U Dark Edition at launch. Will there be low stock of the Dark Wii Edition, or will it be shelf fodder. Will scalpers pick it up, or will regular buyers not justify the high price for basically a single character and his vehicle? At this point, we just don't know.
Official Route
As for Day 1, here is my route:
-TRU: Legendary Hurricane Jet-Vac and possibly Dark Wii Starter Pack
-Target: Nitro Stealth Stinger
-Best Buy: Steel Plated Smash Hit
-GameStop: Frightful Fiesta and Dark Wii U Starter Pack
Skylanders SuperChargers Collection Plans
As always, 2 of each Skylander would be great...I can take both paths and never have to reset and loose precious and time consuming progress. However, where there are not "specials, or alt-decos" on tap, I will likely not be able to finance a 2nd figure for everyone, let alone vehicle. This is why I am a fan of having Darks, Nitros, Legendaries, and characters like Frightful Fiesta and Easter Thrillipede...it makes buying that 2nd one much more justifiable.
So, needless to say, I hope to acquire as many as possible, but will restrain myself to my favorites and those that are practical should it become necessary.
Skylanders SuperChargers Storage
This is a serious issue...If you are a seasoned veteran, you probably have Skylanders in your gaming room, on your consoles, strung across the living room, displayed in the kitchen, and some stored away under your bed...The struggle is real! I am a bit concerned with parking for the vehicles, lol. My tentative plan is to go the el-cheapo route and score some more of the under $1 "shoe boxes" from Target. These are simple Sterlite storage containers with a click-lock lid and they get the job done, while leaving max fundage for Skylanders.
Is it Really Blind?
Oh yes, rest assured it is. While some YouTubers have played a level or two and taken part in some races, others have simply watched some of the footage from Activison or other outlets...but me, all I've done is consume the B-Roll footage the PR team sent out. This is largely highlight reel type material. I've not watched the infamous chapter Lou played thru in the summer, I haven't digested any leaks, and I haven't read any descriptions...I'll be going in knowing as little as possible. The only area I have good intel is the cast of Skylanders. I personally just enjoy this approach much, much more...If I know the entire cast, plot line, and all the twists the game simply looses some of its appeal.
I plan to put a priority on the blind, solo playthru, but after completing a few chapters I'll hit up some friends and viewers for a coop approach.
Depending on how the game is structured, I will also work upgrades and other game modes that may be present into the mix earlier. I have yet to find a perfect balance for how to approach things, largely due to so much content being locked, or tucked away (ie you want to fully ugprade someone, but their Soul Gem is in the last chapter etc).
What Does it All Mean?
Well, if you read all of that...thanks, you are who I cater to in this crazy YouTube life. I do things a bit different than most. I still prefer to focus on the details and attempt to provide viewers with a more intelligent playthrough. I have a M-F job with long hours, and other interests. Video games are an outlet to have fun, relieve stress, and just enjoy some down time.
I have been offered various partnerships, but since I read the contracts, I have never signed off on one...If you were unaware, you can take a partnership and radically grow your channel. I'm not sure the subscribers gained are legit, and people claim they make more money, but I'm kind of here for fun..and I don't like to Skype with people who have names I can't pronounce that use a CC email to 15 other YouTubers telling each of us how unique we are with the same cut-and-paste compliments to go over any negotiations.
The partnerships, in addition to pumping more subscribers and requisite views to your channel, offer some tangible benefits, namely cross promotion (although they always tout their expansive sound effect database and collaboration tool kit). No one likes to talk about cross promotion, but it is real, and it sucks for those on the flip side.
Let's say you have a YouTuber you really connect with (maybe me for instance?!). Let's say they have a playlist of Skylanders SuperChargers that has the complete game and each installment is one chapter. You caught Ch 1 and had stuff to do, so the next night you come in and watch Chapter 2. You think, "Oh hey... a short chapter, I'm going to check out Chapter 3 too!" You scan over to the sidebar with the playlist and instead of seeing Chapter 3, you find a ton of videos from other channels...You think, "Hey, this is supposed to be a playlist for this series, what is the deal?" Well, that is cross promotion at work. A lot of times if you use Auto Play you can go straight from the channel you want to watch, to the channel that is cross promoting. It isn't really "recommended" channels for you, it is channels that are paying to be in another channel's playlists. Head off to a partnered mega-channel's playlist and tell me if you see any vids lurching in the top slots of their playlists...if you do, they'll only be from larger partnered channels.
Basically, to put it in laymen's terms, partnered channels cross promote to both increase their view share and decrease the view share of their competitors. It is a vicious cycle and very frustrating to not have videos measured by their own merits.
I've come to realize, more and more the past few years, that I could actually have a much larger channel by just yelling, raging at the game, and throwing in ridiculous animations and sound effects...that is simply not my style. I have my own delivery and feel I have a niche audience that shares my mindset.
Despite the trends others follow, I just keep doing my own thing. They say it is always best to swim with the current, but I feel like I'm that guy on the bank looking over at the mountain in the distance...I invite you to come with me...especially since that stream leads to the mouth of the cave that the bears hibernate in...
Long story short, SuperChargers is here...I hope it is awesome...I'm not changing my style...Let's have some fun together!!

SKYLANDERS SUPERCHARGERS BRINGS VEHICLES-TO-LIFE
ON SEPTEMBER 20!
New Video Game Puts Players in the Driver's Seat by Introducing an Entirely New Way to Play Skylanders with Land, Sea and Sky Vehicles
Santa Monica, Calif. - June 3, 2015 - Skylanders® is bringing another trailblazing innovation to the #1 kids console franchise(1) with the launch of Skylanders® SuperChargers on September 20, 2015 in North America. Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATVI) and the leaders of the toys-to-life category it created, expands upon the franchise's signature gameplay to introduce vehicles-to-life -- an entirely new way for fans to experience the magic of Skylands.
At the helm of powerful, tricked-out land, sea and sky vehicles, Portal Masters can engage in a high-octane action-adventure videogame like never before. Kids can speed across Skylands' roads in vehicular combat, race down roaring rapids and engage in aerial dogfights as they barrel-roll through enemy swarms for the first time. Developed by Vicarious Visions, Skylanders SuperChargers offers a rich story-driven gameplay experience, filled with vehicle-based and on-foot adventures, combat, puzzles, mini games, activities and platforming, set within a variety of all-new compelling environments.
"We created the toys-to-life category and have continued to lead it by bringing new innovations and new magic to the genre with each and every game. First we brought action figures to life, and now we're bringing vehicles to life with Skylanders SuperChargers," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, Inc. "We love making these games because in order to do it well, you have to constantly tap into your inner kid. What kid hasn't imagined epic vehicles with amazing powers and dreamed about the adventures they could have with them? Skylanders SuperChargers makes those dreams real."
Skylanders SuperChargers features a brand-new class of heroes, called SuperChargers who are distinct with fresh moves, powerful attacks and all-new weapons. These SuperChargers also have special in-game abilities that help Portal Masters fight Kaos. Twenty new SuperChargers character toys and 20 new vehicle toys will be available.
Players will have the ability to customize all vehicles in-game with super cool modifications and upgradeable weapons. For the ultimate gameplay experience, players can pair a SuperCharger Skylander with its signature vehicle to create a SuperCharged combination, unlocking an exclusive mod that revs up the performance of both the vehicle and character. Not only are the vehicles playable in the game, but also many feature moving parts, making them fun to play with outside of the game. Additionally, Skylanders SuperChargers supports all 300+ Skylanders toys from previous games, enabling all Skylanders characters to pilot land, sea or sky-based vehicles.
"Since first partnering with Activision to bring the original Skylanders® Spyro's Adventure to our stores, we have believed whole-heartedly in the magic and innovation of this brand, as well as the company's ability to reimagine and redefine play experiences with the toys-to-life concept," said Richard Barry, Global Chief Merchandising Officer, Toys"R"Us, Inc. "With each new introduction, Activision never disappoints its highly loyal fans of the franchise, and we are thrilled to continue to offer the broadest assortment of all Skylanders® merchandise, including the newly introduced Skylanders SuperChargers."
The game's storyline focuses on Kaos' latest attempt to rule Skylands. In his efforts to take down the Skylanders, Kaos has unleashed his most sinister weapon ever - a massive "Doomstation of Ultimate Doomstruction" capable of eating the sky itself! Fortunately, Master Eon has seen the warning signs and assembled a special team of Skylanders to pilot an unstoppable fleet of land, sea and sky vehicles with the power to travel through the reign of destruction to stop Kaos!
To support the game's announcement, motorsports champion Travis Pastrana stars in the Skylanders SuperChargers trailer. Check out Pastrana having a blast with the Skylanders! Fans can pre-order Skylanders SuperChargers Starter Packs beginning on June 3 at select retail destinations worldwide for the suggested retail price of $74.99 in North America, which includes two new Skylanders characters, a first-of-its kind Skylanders vehicle, newly designed Portal of Power®+ and the full AAA game. Skylanders SuperChargers will be available on Xbox 360™ and Xbox One™video game and entertainment systems from Microsoft, PlayStation® 3 and PlayStation® 4 computer entertainment systems, Nintendo's Wii U™ system, and a different, unique adventure will be made available on Nintendo's Wii™ system and the Nintendo 3DS™ hand-held system. Additionally, the complete Skylanders SuperChargers experience will be available on iPad®. The game will be available on September 20 in North America, September 24 in Australia/New Zealand; and on September 25 in Europe.
About the Skylanders® Franchise
The award-winning, $3 billion Skylanders franchise has sold through more than 250 million action figures since pioneering the toys-to-life category in 2011 with the debut of Skylanders® Spyro's Adventure. The game originated a play pattern that seamlessly bridged physical and virtual worlds across multiple platforms. In 2012, Skylanders® Giants further evolved the genre and added LightCore® characters to the collection of interaction figures. Skylanders® SWAP Force™, which launched in 2013, introduced an all new play pattern - swapability. In 2014, Skylanders® Trap Team reversed the magic of bringing toys to life by allowing players to pull characters out of the digital world into the physical world and became the number 1 kids' console game globally(2). The game was also the first console game to simultaneously bring the entire AAA experience to tablets.

Skylanders Trap Team at E3: Your Questions Answered Part 1
Well, this had the best of intentions and didn't turn out so well...
Instead of going with things by category etc, I thought it would be cool to address the questions as posed by the individual. Yes, I knew there would be overlap. I did not, however, anticipate it would consume around 80 minutes of time. I know you are just looking at a pool table, but each 20 mins or so is roughly 4 GB in the 1280x720 format. So, the roughly 80 minutes is around 15-16 GB. This would take a LOOONG time to render and upload.
So, for now, I have broken off the start and the first few questions (which happened to be my own questions). Below the video I will have kind of a text transcript. I am not sure if I will run with what I have already recorded and break it down by individual, or if I would be better off starting from scratch and then doing a "shout out" to everyone who submitted questions. Whatever I do, you will see, I'm just not set in stone yet.
That said, Part 1 is, so here you go...
Here is a text version if you prefer that...Not verbatim, but I do a rough recap on the question, response, and what my take is from that...

Skylanders Trap Team at E3 Your Questions Answered, Part 1: My Questions
Here is a text version if you prefer that...Not verbatim, but I do a rough recap on the question, response, and what my take is from that...
Console
Q1: Will there be a
difference between the Toys for Bob and Beenox versions of the game?
A1: We are not
talking about that
My Take: The demos were Wii U and PS4, which are both by
Beenox. Toys for Bob is handling the
Wii/360/PS3 versions and Beenox will handle the ports to Wii U/XB1/PS4. We had differences in SWAP Force and I’m
curious if the games will play the same in terms of cutscenes and collectibles on the previous gen consoles AND if the Beenox versions will have anything "extra."
Q2: Will the Wii U still utilize the GamePad screen for
Character Stats?
A2: We are not ready to talk about that.
My Take: Harmless
info imo…Maybe they are going to tout “off screen” gameplay as a selling point
and wanted to wait it out. I hope they
retain something special for the GamePad.
3DS
Q3: Will the 3DS
Starter Pack incorporate different characters? Also, will one be exclusive to the Starter
Pack?
A3: We are not talking about the 3DS version of the game.
My Take: Kind of
surprised they couldn't at least confirm/deny the same set up as past games.
Q4: Will the 3DS version still feature the character roster
found in SWAP Force?
A4: See above…No comments at all on 3DS questions.
My Take: Confirming
this at E3 would have been very nice and really spoils nothing. It was the single most important advancement
in the handheld entries in my opinion.
GamePlay
Q5: How many villains
can be held per crystal?
A5: One. 1. Only
One. Just one.
My Take: Finally confirmation, but it does pose some other
issues.
Q6: Is it possible in 2P Mode to both play as a villain?
A6: No comment.
My Take: Sadly, based on “1 per Trap” and only having one
crystal slot on the portal, I have to say this will not happen. Things may change, but with 1 per trap, you’d
have an odd situation on hand.
Q7: Will there be a Single Player Battle Mode (ie P1 as
Terrafin vs CPU as Slam Bam)?
A7: I got, “We can’t
talk about that,” “Ask PR,” and a few “No” responses. Leads me to believe it will be a no go for
Trap Team. More on why I asked this
later.
My Take: Pretty much what I expected. Solo Battle Mode (Skylander vs Skylander by
way of a CPU) is the natural precursor to anything online and in my opinion
make the most sense. One of the
purported reasons for a lack of “online” is protecting the young audience. What is the best way to do that and ensure no
one is exposed to anything bad online?
Use a CPU! I’ll elaborate more on
this later.
Q8: Is there a special role for Giants and Swappers in Trap
Team?
A8: No.
My Take: Quite surprising.
Even though Giants didn’t do much in SWAP Force, you were at least
inclined to pick them up and open a chest…Kind of a nice nod to the past and
incentive to keep them handy and continue to play as the past characters for
more reasons than just wanting to…
Shockingly, the reason for this goes back to focus groups
with the kids. They found kids wanted to
play with the “new” figures and characters, not their old figures. So, with the emphasis on focus groups, there
will be no special areas or reasons to specifically use your Giants and
Swappers. That said, since the game is
fully backward compatible, you can still play as Tree Rex or Free Ranger just
because you want to, or because they are your favorites.
Q9: Please bring back the original SSA Castaways (not a
question, but I don’t care).
A9: We aren’t talking about character rosters, or reposes.
My Take: Last year I was able to get a “Yes, you will see
some of them (Castaways),” which would have totally been fine with me…I don’t expect
to get a “Oh yeah man…S2 TripWire Voodood, S2 Skull Master Ghost Roaster, and
wait till you see S2 Fright Rider” etc…
The tight lips in that regard, kept me from pursuing a
request or teaser for any other reposes, be they S2, S3 (Jet-Vac, Pop Fizz), or
S4 (Spyro, Trigger Happy, etc).
Off camera, with several different folks, I did at least ask
about reposed Giants (Swarm, Crusher) or SWAP Force Skylanders (Boom Jet, Night
Shift, etc.). The answer was the same as
above…no comment on any character info.
What concerns me is that I heard the Trap Masters referred
to as “Guest Stars” multiple times. I
also heard a few people call Giants and Swappers “Guest Stars.” This leads me to the assumptive conclusion
that at this point, all of the “gimmick” Skylanders are viewed as just that, “Guest
Stars.” So while Spyro, Gill Grunt, and
others that catch on like Jet-Vac and Pop Fizz might get a near annual repose,
the “Guest Stars” are likely to remain one trick ponies. The good news is, of course, if you love
Bouncer and Spy Rise you can always continue to play them in new releases. The bad news is, at this point in time, it
seems highly unlikely that we would see S2 Eye-Brawl, or S2 Magna Charge. Maybe they don’t want to tip their hand, but
I had NEVER heard “Guest Star” until this year.
The “Core” Skylanders are referred to as “Legacy” Skylanders by high end
people and “fan favorites” by the more grounded spokes people…Seems sad so many
great characters could just be “one and done.”
That said, one thing that is clear is they never seem to rule anything
out.
Q10: If LightCores still exist, will you give them WowPows
or a recharge of the Flash Bomb?
A10: No comment, or not commenting on character specifics.
My Take: I did it. I
gave my “LightCore Sermon” to around 4 different people…I think it seemed to
resonate well with at least two of them.
I think it is no secret that the LightCores have not sold as intended,
particularly when they are of a reposed character (ie not BRAND NEW). My sermon kind of highlights those
reasons. For those who have somehow not
heard my rant, cough sermon, here are the cliff notes:
--LightCores are great in that they are a unique pose and
have a Light Up Effect
---It is all downhill from there
--They do not have a WowPow, which makes them weaker than
their counterparts (when applicable, ie S2).
---LightCore figures MUST have a WowPow and the ability to
switch paths (outside of brand new LCs).
--The Flash Bomb is auto initiated right upon loading into
the game…and it can not be recharged
---The Flash Bomb should be user executed and rechargeable via
set XP, or time intervals
Q11: Will there be Adventure Packs or Battle Packs?
A11: We are not talking about that at this time.
MyTake: Really? You can’t even give a tease of an answer,
something like, “They may be back, but not like you are used to seeing them.” I think the APs are far more sought after
than the BPs, and personally I liked the 4 APs in SSA the best. Giants offered 2 and 2, just like SF, but to
me that APs deliver the good with extra content (ie a Chapter), cool and unique
stories with memorable non-playable characters, and they have had great
Skylanders packaged in (cough, SSA’s 4 APs, cough).
I thought we would at least get a, “Yeah you will see them” and
maybe even a “We have 2 Adventure Packs and 2 Battle Packs once again”
etc. No such luck. Last year I got this info from the Vicarioius
Visions guys.
Q12: Is the portal wired?
Is there a volume control? And
will the new portal work with the old games?
A12: Yes. Yes. Yes.
My Take: Makes sense
to be wired, but I wanted to double check…I saw it first hand. I never did find the volume control on my own
(the booths were very dark so you could record gameplay I believe), but 2
people told me there was a separate volume control on the portal. It took some digging, like last year, but I
finally got confirmation that the portal will work with the older games. This question seems to take people by
surprise till I explain, “You know, the SF Portal worked for SSA and Giants, so
you just had to keep one out…discounting the Trap portion etc, will the
Traptanium Portal be able to be plugged in and load up characters in SWAP Force
etc.”
Who knows, maybe I confused the person that said yes, but
once I explained it and laid out I wasn’t expecting the Traps or sounds to
work, they were quick to say, “Yeah, you can just use the one portal for all
the games.” So for those who like being
tidy, this is welcome news!

Skylanders SWAP Force Unboxing the Xbox One Starter Pack
What? Skylanders SWAP Force Starter Pack for Xbox One
Where Did You Get It? Special Delivery
What Does It Cost? $74.99 lus tax, currently on sale for $59.99!!
What Was Stock Like? Well stocked everywhere
What is Included? Xbox One Game Disc, Wired Portal of Power, Collector's Poster, Wash Buckler, Blast Zone, and Ninja Stealth Elf all with Stat Cards and Sticker Sheets
This isn't quite as detail oriented for me, particularly regarding the characters...That said, if you want details, check out the Wii U Starter Pack unboxing.
So, you are probably asking, why pick up another Starter Pack? I picked up a XB1 to play a few titles that skip Nintendo and some that are Microsoft exclusives that my Nephew and I will enjoy. Obviously, this SP will allow me to play the game on a different console. Why do that? Simple...
First, I will play the XB1 version behind the Wii U's blind playthrough. I will be doing this to level up and get cash for the characters not featured as prominently in the blind playtrhough (think alt-deco, S2, and S3 characters) as my emphasis in the blind playthrough will be SWAP Force Skylanders and Newlanders.
Second, when I complete most everything on the Wii U, I will come in and record Nightmare Mode on the XB1 which will let you compare and contrast the game, graphics, and more across two systems.
Again, I can't stress that Skylanders SWAP Force is the best game going in the kid friendly, family fun genre for the XB1. Some might even argue, at this point, that SWAP Force is the best game currently available for the XB1.
I am looking forward to playing the game and getting the bonus of utilizing the characters not featured as prominently in the blind playthrough. This means I can continue to use Scorp, Riptdie, and Countdown in the blind playthrough, but come upgrade time Knockout Terrafin, Anchors Away Gill Grunt, and Big Bang Trigger Happy will be levelled up, have cash for upgrades, and be more ready to take on Nightmare mode with their Newlander counterparts.
I have never owned an Xbox and SWAP Force is my first XB1 game, actually arriving BEFORE the actual console :D
Don't forget, you can currently catch all STARTER PACKS on sale at retailers like Toys'R'Us and GameStop, anywhere from $15-$20 off...It is a great chance to land that second Blast Zone and Wash Buckler if you missed out on the Dark Edition Starter Pack.

Skylanders Giants Unboxing GITD 3DS Starter Pack
Nintendo 3DS Starter Pack with GITD Cynder and GITD Portal of Power (Walmart Exclusive)
Just as with the Wii Starter Pack, let's just get down to the basics:
What Is It? Nintendo 3DS Giants Starter pack
Where Did You Get It? Walmart. It is exclusive to Walmart/Sam's Club in the US.
How Did You Get It? Walmart.com's Site-to-Store
What Did It Cost? $74.99 plus tax (site to store doesn't charge shipping)
Does It Cost Extra? No, despite the GITD features it is the same price as a basic Starter Pack.
What Is Included? Nintendo 3DS Game, GITD Portal of Power, GITD Cynder, Punch Pop Fizz, and Tree Rex. Also included is a character poster, stat cards, stickers, and web codes for Spyro's Universe.
What Was The Stock Like? This is definitely the toughest Starter Pack to track down, not just because of the GITD stuff. Since this Starter Pack in base form features the 3DS Exclusive Punch Pop Fizz it is moving fast. This is the only way to get Punch Pop Fizz. Think of him as the Dark Spyro of Skylanders Giants. A lot of people (scalpers included) will purchase this pack just to mark up Punch Pop Fizz and then make eve more selling the other items solo. I had my first order cancelled and then upon visiting several stores the 3DS Starter Pack was by far the least common. I have first hand accounts from others documenting this across the nation.
Will This Be Rare? Again, I can't say. Activision could have "x" rounds of production, a pre-determined number, a set cut-off date...it is all unknown to me. That said, this is a heck of a deal as you not only get Punch Pop Fizz but also GITD Cynder and a GITD Portal of Power. If you are going to get a 3DS Starter Pack this is the route to go imo.
Why Did You Get the GITD Version? Unlike the Wii version, I had planned to get the Starter Pack for 3DS months ago. I did hold off for special sales or promotions, but when the news of Walmart's Exclusive GITD version hit I pre-ordred as soon as possible. This one also comes down to value and uniqueness.
This is the same price as a run-of-the-mill 3DS Starter Pack, but you get a GITD Portal and GITD Cynder. With the Portal Owner's Pack running $59.99 coupled with the fact Punch Pop Fizz is exclusive to this Starter Pack, the $15 price difference is more than justified. Tacking on a GITD Portal and GITD Cynder (which you can use for trade fodder...ie a friend finds Rock Zook, Polar Whirlwind, or has an old GITD you like better etc).
Conclusion
The 3DS Starter Pack in the Walmart Exclusive GITD form is a tough deal to beat. In fact, I would rank it the #1 value overall. I know I am a big Jet-Vac fan, but his LightCore is now out and his standard figure will be making the round eventually. Punch Pop Fizz will be just like Dark Spyro.
When you can land a truly exclusive character and score a GITD Variant you are doing well. The GITD Potrtal is a nice touch and allows SSA 3DS owners the option of having one at home and one in the car or for travel etc.
I haven't even mentioned that the 3DS game is once again entirely different from the console versions...take that into consideration and it is a no brainer.
If you do not have a 3DS I would suggest you pick one up. Between Giants and Spyro's Adventure you've got 2 solid games I know you will like. Toss in Nintendo exclusives and it is truly an incredible system (not to mention you can have all the old DS games on tap too).
I do want to mention you still need to be careful with Tree Rex when getting him out of the packaging.
The other item of note is that this portal does not have a USB Port or USB Cable. That means you can not use it to load up Skylanders into the Spyro's Universe online game. A minor deal, but worth noting.
Similarly, what shocked me is that Giants 3DS qualifies for Club Nintendo!! The console version did not...I was totally unaware of this and have already registered for 60 coins!
Overall this is a great value as you get a totally new game different from the console versions, the GITD Portal, GITD Cynder, and of course the 3DS Exclusive Punch Pop Fizz! Plus you've now got another way to take Skylanders on-the-go!

Skylanders: Giants Information, Characters, Powers, Compatibility
This post will remain a work in progress as new information is released and/or I have time to update the post...feel free to comment with what you know...Again, I will update as time allows. I will also stick to posting only things that are confirmed or very likely to be true. The original draft was composed Monday, June 18th, 2012 and published Tuesday, June 19th, 2012. The latest revision is Feburary, 26th, 2013.
About the Game
-Release Date & Pre-Order
Skylanders: Giants will be the follow-up game to the smash-hit, and 1ofWiisdom staple, Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure. The game is available for pre-order now at various places (Amazon, GameStop, Toys'R'Us, etc) and is slated for release on Sunday, October 21st, 2012 just ahead of Thanksgiving and the impending holiday rush where us veteran Skylanders really saw things get crazy.
Background Story
I heard this in an August 4th, 2012 interview with Alex Ness...here is the recap:
Kaos is on earth in a toy store trying to get back to Skylands and something he does with a portal sends him way back, literally, in Skylands. He finds and figures out how to activate an ancient Arkeyan robot and then learns that if he controls the "Iron Fist of Arkus" he will be in control of the entire ancient army of Arkeyans and can then proceed to defeat the Skylanders and rule all of Skylands.
-Game Engine
Giants will run on the same engine as Spyro's Adventure. All console versions will be developed, once again, by Toys for Bob. The 3DS Version, which should again be unique, will be switched from Vicarious Visions to n-Space...Here is an easy to read breakdown:
-Plartforms
Nintendo Wii and Nintendo Wii U (Developed by Toys for Bob)
Nintendo 3DS (Developed by n-Space (Spyro's Adventure was done by Vicarious Visions))
Microsoft Xbox 360 (Developed by Toys for Bob)
Microsoft Windows (Developed by Toys for Bob)
Sony Playstation 3 (Developed by Toys for Bob)
-Packaging
Skylanders: Giansts will come in two flavors: Starter Pack (with Portal) and Portal Owner's Pack (no Portal). It is unknown if different versions will have different characters (ie Console=Jet-Vac, 3DS=Pop Fizz). We will just have to wait and see at this point. Update: It actually looks like my sample was correct...Jet Vac goes to Console Packs and Pop Fizz goes to the 3DS Packs!
--Starter Pack
Each Skylanders: Giants Starter Pack will include: Portal of Power, Game Disc/Cartridge, Poster, 1 Giant (Tree Rex), 1 New Skylander (Jet Vac), and 1 Re-Released Skylander (Cynder), as well as the matching Trading Cards and Stickers.
--Portal Owner's Pack
This is designed for people who already own a portal and want to take advantage of the savings. It will feature the Game Disc/Cartridge, Poster, 1 Giant (Tree Rex), 1 New Skylander (Jet Vac), and the matching Trading Cards and Stickers.
Compatibility
--Forward Compatibility
The Skylanders you know and love from Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure will transfer right across to Giants AND they can join the new releases in being able to upgrade to Level 15. That said, they will not be able to have any other perks you see with the Giants based Skylanders as they can not have multiple upgrade paths or capitalize on the "Wow Pow" Powers.
--Backwards Compatibility
I did not expect this, but according the official Giants website, Series 2 (ie what will come out with Giants) will actually be able to play in Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure. The answer doesn't explicitly mention Giants, but the question does...I will have a screen grab below.
New Skylanders
This is probably what most of you, at least at this point, want to know the most about...I will do my best to keep you up to date. As I've said for quite some time, our best bet for info was E3, and it delivered.
-Giant Skylanders
--8 New, 1 per Element
There will be 1 Giant per Element and they will truly be "giant" when compared to their counterparts. They should be just a shade over 2 times the height of a regular Skylander.
-Air Giant: Swarm
-Earth Giant: Crusher
-Fire Giant: Hot Head
-Life Giant: Tree Rex
-Magic Giant: Ninjini
-Tech Giant: Bouncer
-Undead Giant: Eye Brawl
-Water Giant: Thumpback
-LightCore Skylanders
--8 Total, 4 Brand New, 4 Previously Released (ie from the original 32)
These Skylanders light up when placed on the portal of power and have special "LightCore" powers. In addition to that, whatever that may be anyway lol, they will reportedly light up in the game. So unlike the current variants (Gold, Silver, Glow-in-the-Dark etc) these will not only look special in real life and on the portal, but also in the game...Well played Activsion, well played.
-New LightCore, Air: Jet-Vac
-New LightCore, Life: Shroomboom
-New LightCore, Magic: Pop-Fizz
-New LightCore, Water: Chill
-Old LighCore, Earth: PrismBreak
-Old LightCore, Fire: Eruptor
-Old LightCore, Tech: Drobot
-Old LightCore, Undead: Hex
-New Regular Sized Skylanders
--8 Total, 1 per Element: 4 Regular, 4 LightCore
-New Regular, Air: Jet-Vac (Lightcore)
-New Regular, Earth: Flashwing
-New Regular, Fire: Hot Dog
-New Regular, Life: Shroomboom (Light Core)
-New Regular, Magic: Pop Fizz (Light Core)
-New Regular, Tech: Sprocket
-New Regular, Undead: Fright Rider
-New Regular, Water: Chill (Light Core)
-New LightCore, Air: Jet-Vac
-New LightCore, Life: Shroomboom
-New LightCore, Magic: Pop-Fizz
-New LightCore, Water: Chill
--New LightCore, Water: Legendary Chill
-New "Re-Released" Skylanders
--24 of the 32 will be coming back in regular form, but in a different pose...3 from each element.
--4 of these 24 "Re-Released" Skylanders will be LightCore (see above: Eruptor, Prism Break etc).
-Air: Lightning Rod
-Air: Sonic Boom
-Air: Whirlwind
-Earth: Bash
-Earth: Prism Break (LightCore)
-Earth: Terrafin
-Fire: Eruptor (LightCore)
-Fire: Flameslinger
-Fire: Ignitor, Legendary Ignitor
-Life: Stealth Elf
-Life: Stump Smash
-Life: Zook
-Magic: Double Trouble
-Magic: Spyro
-Magic: Wrecking Ball
-Tech: Drill Sergeant
-Tech: Drobot (Light Core)
-Tech: Trigger Happy
-Undead: Chop Chop
-Undead: Cynder
-Undead: Hex (Light Core)
-Water: Slam Bam, Legendary Slam Bam
-Water: Gill Grunt
-Water: Zap
-Legendaries
-Legendary Slam Bam
-Legendary Ignitor
-Legendary Stealth Elf
-Legendary Jet-Vac
-Legendary Bouncer
-Legendary LightCore Chill
There have been rumors and even a few decent pics or screen grabs of what looks like a maxed out Legendary Slam Bam and Legendary Ignitor. If I had to guess, I would think we might see 8 of them total...That would allow for 3 from each Element to be released in a new pose, and 1 from each Element to be released as a legendary, thus making all 32 available in some form or another for another purchase.
*Again, this is just my speculation on June 18th, 2012, but I have heard crazier things...This just seems too likely to me...Activision can congratulate me for a correct prediction by sending new characters to demo :D
Variants
Potential Variants:
--Nothing at this time has been made official, but you can bank on some "chase" Skylanders. I heard Alex Ness mention in an August 4th, 2012 interview they had some cool stuff planned in regards to variants.
I would think we might see more of the translucents, but in different shades...or metallic/pearl/dark variants. I would bank that they will be like the past set-up...Hard to find, loaded with cash/partially levelled up etc, but probably look the same in the game.

Releases: Single Pack, Triple Pack, Battle Pack etc.
I will indicate "New" behind brand-new Skylanders. Your old favorites listed out can be assumed to be their reposed "Series 2" releases.
Adventure Packs
Skylanders: Giants will have no new Adventure Packs. The old APs however will work, which I assume means they'll unlock new chapters just as they did previously.
Battle Packs
In place of the Adventure Packs, Giants will feature Battle Packs. Basically 2 characters packaged with an item that unlocks a new Battle Arena. It is my hope, especially since there has been no confirmation of a Single Player Battle Mode, that they will also function as a "magic item" in Giants gameplay.

Castaways (Added 8/7/2012)
I thought it only fitting to make note of the Skylanders from Series 1 which are not going to be treated to a repose. I think Part of this is based on sales, and part is based on release date. Warnado, Camo, and Wham-Shell are all insanely popular, and a lot of people still don't have them...With people getting them May-September, it makes sense to not crank out another...With others like Boomer, Voodood and Ghost Roaster, I think it is simply based on sales. They just didn't move as much as the others. I am really sad not to see a Dino-Rang repose, primarly due to the fact we had so much Bash in SSA (Regular, Legendary, Blue Bash at TRU etc). Either way, Dino-Rang will remain a favorite of mine as will Ghost Roaster!
Here is the current list of "castaways:"
-Booomer (the more people hate on him, the more I like him)
-Camo
-Dino-Rang (A favorite of mine, hard to repose though)
-Ghost Roaster (Metal Head had WIN written all over it)
-Sunburn
-Voodood
-Warnado
-Wham-Shell
Powers
-The Original 32 (Green Base=Skylanders Spyro's Adventure)
The good news here is that your favorites from SSA can play in Giants AND upgrade to Level 15. They will not have any new powers, but will supposedly enter just as you have them. So if Terrafin is your favorite, he is maxed out with a SoulGem and down Sandhog, he should enter Chapter 1 of Giants in his killer form!
-Series 2: 8 New and 24 Re-Released from SSA's Roster (Orange Base)
Not only will all Series 2 Skylanders have the ability to upgrade to Level 15, but they will have what is known as "Wow Pow" Powers, basically something above and beyond the regular upgrade paths and Soul Gem seen with "Series 1" Skylanders. Perhaps the best feature is that Series 2 Skylanders can switch paths.
-Giants
Each of the 8 Giants will have some massive powers to match their impressive stature.
You will see Giants able to walk on enemies and over treasure etc...They will also be able to bash (ie gain entry to areas regular Skylanders can not) and throw items (like boulders, not natural powers). As you have seen in the trailer there is also "Feats of Strength" where you have to perform a certain action to advance through the level (think Elemental Gate from SSA, but on a larger scale).
Skylanders: Giants: In Game Features
There is not going to be online play at this point.
There has still yet to be confirmation of a SINGLE PLAYER BATTLE MODE, which is what I would like to see the most in Giants.
An August 4th, 2012 interview with Alex Ness revealed that there was a game called Sky Stones
Skylanders: Spyro Universe
This will still be around and will be adapted to accommodate new Series 2, Light Core, and Giant figures...It is also believed they will contnue to add games etc.
What I Would Like to See
-Pre-Order
It is nice to see the game is already up for pre-order, but is that to accommodate us die-hards, or is it because they are planning to make the game a nightmare to obtain? You know, where it comes out mid-October and you can not find it until January, or nearly get killed and/or pay 3x the retail price to land one prior to Christmas. I would really like to see the pre-order go for us die-hards and then have it function because it lets Activision estimate interest and quantity and then work to fulfill those orders and ramp up production to match etc.
I would obviously like to see this with the game and characters. So if someone wants to order all the new Skylanders, they can fork over the cash in December and know they will see them the same day the local stores get 2 cases to sell out in an hour.
-Release Schedule
I realize these are made overseas and stuff happens, but it would be great (once the game is out and we know the character roster) that you will land X, Y, and Z Skylander at Q, W, and E Dates. Even if you just announce that December 1st is when you can pre-order Wave 3 Skylanders that will ship mid-January it would be huge.
The rush to hit the store and time things with trucks is fun...about once every 3 months when you actually have the stars line-up. The scalpers need to be put at bay...Activision and their retailers are not the ones profiting it is greedy individuals who likely don't even care about the game...Just eliminate it...we will gladly pay retail, in advance of the product, to avoid hassles...
-Bigger Challenge
The game is sort of geared towards a younger audience and I understand wanting to keep it accessible, but having some way of adjusting the difficulty would be great. A few ideas would be having something unlock after defeating Kaos for the first time, or simply having the option to select it at the title screen, or per chapter etc.
-Single Player Battle Mode**
I have still not heard if it will feature SINGLE PLAYER BATTLE MODES, but it if does not, it is a HUGE BLUNDER. Imagine a Madden Game where you can not play a practice game without having a friend. I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume this is a no-brainer.
Conclusion
Skylanders: Giants is shaping up to be a great follow-up. We don't have a lot of information just yet, but we should see more with trailers and screen caps released along the way.
I know I am looking forward to it and to answer a very popular question: "Yes, I plan to do unboxings and a blind playthrough of the game...much like you saw with Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure."
Again, as of right now (June 18th, 2012) there is more we don't know than we do know. I will update this as time allows, or more likely, as info is released.
**Updated August 6th, 2012. Added a few confirmed names...Some info from an August 4th, 2012 Interview with Alex Ness, the just confirmed GameStop Battle Pack, and pricing and release dates etc (which I should have already done, just got too focused on the "cool" stuff).
**Updated August 13th, 2012. I saw this yesterday morning, but am just now getting to post about it...Ther was another leak via an online vendor creating place holder pages (ie all the info, price etc, just waiting on image sets). Luckily someone caught it, took screen caps, and shared with everyone. This, for better or worse, revealed all the remaining characters OFFICIAL NAMES. We still don't have all the info (release dates, waves, single/triple/battle pack configurations etc). Nonetheless, this is a big deal!
Updated February 26th, 2013. I decided to finally take the time to add in the variants and update the single pack and triple pack listings with what is currently known.
