Best Moments of 2013: What Were Your Favorites?

It is hard to believe that yet another year has flown by and we are on the doorstep of 2014. That said, what were some of your favorite moments of 2013?  This could be gaming related, family, career, personal, stemming from another hobby etc., accomplishments, just anything you enjoyed or are proud of completing.

For me it would have to be going to E3 and that entire experience (getting to meet with folks from Activision, PowerA, Vicarious Visions, other YouTubers...having early access to all the content that I had just had to watch from online in previous years and then being able to report it back to you, straight from the source), being able to see the Nintendo setup first hand, getting StreetPass tags from all over the place, and just being able to mine and search for insights on Skylanders SWAP Force from the people that know it best.

Tying in with that was seeing the Pacific Ocean (first time seeing any ocean mind you!) and I'm also pretty sure as I was trying to figure out how to get back to the bus that would run back to the hotel I saw Jenna Marbles, but I can't 100% confirm that.

On the gaming front it would likely be continuing to share Skylander content with everyone, seeing the Wii U come back this holiday season to spite the naysayers, landing Street Pass Tags with the expanded Nintendo Zone coverage, playing extensive amounts of Minecraft with my Nephew, and diving in to both Animal Crossing New Leaf and the Xbox One.

Personally, I won a pretty big, nation-wide contest relating to another of my hobbies which was a really cool experience.

I also had a few other neat trips, was fortunate enough to attend another Cowboys game (which they won fyi), and then of course a few other accomplishments and good times.

But enough about me...What were some of your best moments of 2013?  I hope you all enjoyed this current year and are ready to start the New Year and make the most of it as well!

New Year Channel Update

Here are the high points:

SWAP Force Wave 3
-Still trying to land W3 Swappers from Target, probably going to get them elsewhere
-I will keep you posted on W3's LCs, BP, and AP

Recording Upgrades
-I am now able to record in full 1080p HD
--The new capture card and TV have made this possible
---Look for a big boost to recording quality starting with Chapter 6 of the SWAP Force Blind Playthrough and sometime around SWAP Force Intro #26 or so
-I have thru Chapter 5 recorded and around 45 Introductions
--I will be editing, uploading, and making those videos LIVE before recording anything else

Xbox One
-I will be playing SWAP Force on XB1 behind the Wii U's blind playthrough
--This will let me level up and get cash for all the characters to prep for Nightmare Mode
---Currently the plan is to record Nightmare Mode from the XB1

Animal Crossing New Leaf
-I will get the video with my Dream Address up soon
--From there I will have a blog post where you can leave your address to share with others, this will hopefully help earn some badges etc.

Odds-and-Ends
-I have a few more quick videos to get cranked out, several are already on YouTube, just waiting for a blog post to be made "Public"
-My Nephew and I have several new recording series in the works...
--As soon as I get caught up on the current batch of SF recordings I will get some things going there
-I will be continuing Castaways vs Newlanders and running other polls

A Note from the End of An Incredible Day

I literally just walked into the hotel room after a long, non-stop, action-packed, fun-filled day...The use of extra hyphens was intentional.  I truly had a great time...The best way to summarize everything I learned to day is this:

You are going to love Swap Force!  The game looks amazing and so many little things are involved in such big improvements on an already solid franchise.

While our after hours in the booth was spent by most on gameplay recordings, I was fortunate enough to pick the brains of the developers, Vicarious Visions...two of the most down to earth guys I have ever met...and yes, that means I focused on your questions (and some of my own).  By no means could I get everything answered in the given time, but we have a great start.  Plus, what we don't know at this point is just going to make things better!

I will be leaving out tomorrow from LA and won't be back home until close to midnight...I will have to hold off on the video side of things until I'm back at the house...That said, I will try to stay up late and get some of the core info I was able to learn posted for everyone, just as promised.  Again, all I can say is Swap Force is going to be BIG!  The Power of Choice is coming in a beautiful package! A big thanks to everyone who helped make this happen from the folks at the very top, to those who have supported this blog and my YouTube endeavors.  We all share a common interest and the underlying goal is to just have fun...Swap Force is going to make that VERY easy!

I'm Going to E3!

Well, the title says it all in this one...

I am going to E3!

And yes, I am serious!

This is the "big news" I have teased of for around a month now...

I started recording and uploading to YouTube for fun and because my Nephew and I enjoyed it...I have always gone for games we are interested in and things I think would be fun over what I figure would get views etc.

When Skylanders launched it was a launch day purchase...I had followed the trailers and was very interested in it...plus I thought my Nephew would really dig the "bring the toys to life" concept.

Picking it up kind of started the routine of Skylander Hunting, Unboxing Skylanders, and of course introducing them with great detail etc.

Well, fast forward two years and Giants is wrapping up while Swap Force is on its way out...I am still knee deep in the details of the Giants playthrough and I had an e-mail inquiring about Skylanders.

Just fyi, I get a ton of e-mails, PMs, DMs, comments, etc every day regarding Skylanders...I get several off-the-wall messages on YouTube and some legit things like proposed partnerships etc.

This PM seemed very odd...almost too good to be true.  It was someone who works with an affiliate company of Activision commenting on my Skylanders content and asking if I would be up for receiving insider news and review copies etc...

Naturally, I had to research things before responding...that whole "if it seems too good to be true, it probably is" rhetoric...yeah, I believe in it.

Most of the time...

I checked up on the company etc. and the only thing alarming was that they wanted to send me insider info and review copies.  Naturally I took them up on this opportunity.

Well, a few weeks later I had an e-mail with that first "inside info."  It was regarding Skylanders Swap Force at E3...I was invited (insert shocked face).  Once more that whole, "This really isn't happening thing...something must be up" came over me...Then I came back to reality and remembered it all seemed legit.  I responded I would need some time to see if I could get off of work etc.

That all lined up and next thing I knew I was getting the VIP treatment and more details on the trip and presentation that was planned.

I held off mentioning this to anyone until NOW.  I wanted to get it on the BLOG FIRST.  Kind of a reward for those of you that check the site frequently.  The video is coming along, but this will remain the first point of the news break.

I have to say, several weeks later I am still kind of surprised by this...

I'm a big believe that when you do what you love, good things will come from it...I have to view this in that same light.

I don't want to go out and put this company on record as I know there will be a lot of people trying to line up the same deal, or get a trip to E3 etc.  I will just say this...I didn't seek this out...I never filled out any paperwork or entered a contest...never pushed my content to corporate or the likes.  I just stuck to my routine of hunting, finding, unboxing, and playing.  I am basically just having fun...While in that sequence someone from an affiliate company happened upon the content, checked it out, liked it, and thought enough of it to invite me to be a part of the "inside" if you will.

I am STOKED!!

Had I never have received that e-mail, I would have spent E3 anxiously scanning the net for any info on Swap Force to report back and blog...Now, I will do the same thing, but FIRST HAND.  IT is going to be awesome!

I suppose Activision's stance when tasking their affiliate with finding folks to bring along was to generate buzz for Swap Force etc.  I can definitely oblige in that regard!  Similarly, it gets me super excited and then in turn, I get to tell you first hand accounts and can seek out what you want to know, or would like me to try to unearth etc.

It is truly a Win-Win-Win in my book.  Good Public Relations AND by bringing in the core fan base to the event, you are getting the info and news out via those established mediums that other enthusiasts turn to, or rely on for information!  Needless to say, I will do my best to bring you ALL THE INFORMATION I can regarding Swap Force and Skylanders in general...

I can't think the folks behind this enough and I will do my best to get all the news out.  And feat not, I am not "bought" off.  If there is some ridiculous concept etc. I will still report back on it...I also hope to push for Single Player Battle Mode if I get the chance.

In my opinion being a hard core fan doesn't mean agreeing with everything, it means being passionate and caring enough about the franchise to present viewpoints regardless of how they gel with corporate etc.

The bottom line remains, however, this is a great opportunity, should be a ton of fun, and I can't wait to learn as much as I can regarding Swap Force and report back to you!

I can say that it looks like Activision will be making a big reveal Tuesday, June 11th, 2013 behind closed doors...Lucky for you, I will be there!  I will flim as much as they will allow, but I've already found that in a few instances that will not be allowed...so, I'm going to go old school and take notes!

I don't want to ramble on in this post as much as I did in the video, but I will close on this..

I'm still somewhat shocked, humbled, and perhaps most importantly very excited about this opportunity.  If there is any down time from Skylanders activity I may try to sneak some looks at Nintendo's software and a few other things...My main focus though will be Swap Force!

Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon Unboxing and Overview

Unboxing and Overview

I have been looking forward to this game for a LONG TIME.  I was pretty hard on Nintendo for not getting it cranked out at Halloween (2012 that is).  I just still don't see much logic in making this a "Spring" game and  having Sticker Star as a "Fall" release.

Since that time, and in the last couple of weeks we have learned that 2013 is the Year of Luigi.  We also learned that Luigi's Mansion was delayed until Nintendo was happy with the online and multiplayer aspects of the game...Putting it on target with Mario Kart is a lofty goal...even falling short, you are in good territory.

I still think this game should have been a mid-October release to cash in on Halloween and then the holiday rush, but oh well.  My personal feeling for why they released the game now was to get it out as most had been expecting it to drop October 2012.

All that aside, if the game is good, and the online gameplay is at the same level as Mario Kart I don't think anyone will mind in the slightest.  You can of course hold out to play it until Halloween, but what fun is that?

This game is a MUST BUY for any LUIGI fan.  It has been 12 years since Luigi's Mansion helped launch the GameCube.  To say the arrival of this game has not been eagerly awaited would be a lie.  Just think...If you were 10 years old when the game launched with the GameCube and you loved it...You are now 22, 4 years out of high school, and likely nearing the end of college if that is the route you went.

The shock most had with the downtime is that it was a very well received game and had, and still has, a very large fan base.

If Nintendo decided to make 2013 the Year of Luigi, they picked a great launch for the campaign.

I was also, however, disappointed with the lack of ANY pre-order bonus.  A Luigi Hat, figure, keychain, heck any Luigi merchandise would have been cool.  Europe apparently get glow-in-the-dark cover art AND a Boo Stress Relief Ball...either would have been awesome in my opinion.

As is, I did not pre-order the game, but rather waited it out...That turned into a good decision as I cashed in on a Toys'R'Us sale that got me the game for $23.99 instead of $39.99 with 40% Off.

I have high hopes for this game and if all goes well I will be mixing it in with my current slate starting (now!).  If it lives up to the hype and anticipation, I will likely revisit the game around Halloween...making it a great value.

I, like so many others, am definitely looking forward to FINALLY playing Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon.

Weekly Update 2-7-2013: Molten Hot Dog and Metallic Blue Chop Chop

Hey Folks...long time no regular old blog post.

I will be taking care of that tonight, hopefully as I will update you on the Skylanders Giants Playthrough, recap some polls, launch some new polls, and of course make sure you've seen the two posts on Skylanders Swap Force (one with basic info, and another with the character roster).

For the time being, how about you take a gander at the Walmart Exclusive Molten Hot Dog!







So, how do you like Molten Hot Dog?  The best news here is that this is a Walmart Exclusive.  While I am not a big fan of the chain (mainly bc they are always packed), it is a great thing because they are about the only chain that does a good job of keeping their variants on the shelf.  With that in mind, I do not think it will be tough to land Molten Hot Dog.

The other big perk to this set up is that unlike many had speculated (myself included) we will NOT have to buy a Scorpion Striker Battle Pack at Walmart to land Molten Hot Dog.  Presumably they should start having them after the GameStop window closes and simultaneously have the Molten Hot Dog Single Pack for those looking to add him to their collection, or for those who simply don't care for the battle pack and magic items etc.

This could change when I see him in person, but right now, I have to give my personal preference award to regular old Hot Dog...he just looks better in flame red...the yellow looks like he rolled around in mustard.  Nonetheless, I look forward to adding him to my collection to have both upgrade paths active at the same time!

Similarly, if you are a Molten Hot Dog fanatic, I spotted this on Amazon a few nights ago:


It will retail for $5.99, but shows to not ship until May.  The earlier Quiz Quest Books have not impressed me, but this might be worth looking into...Here is the link




Before we get too far away from Molten Hot Dog, I want to bring up the good chance that we see Jade Flashwing, Polar Whirlwind, and Scarlet Ninjini show up as other store exclusives....The most likely outlets being Target, GameStop, and yet again Walmart.  These are known, in-game variants AND distinct from others like Stone Zook, Sparkle Sprocket, etc.

I had long ago speculated we might have Triple Pack #9 be Molten Hot Dog, Jade Flashwing, and Polar Whirlwind...I guess that isn't as likely now, but it would have still been a nice gesture to fans from Activision IF it came with acknowledgment PRIOR to all the others being released in single pack form.

Other Pending Characters

Before we get too wrapped up on an in-game variant, what about the "yet to be released" Skylanders?  Great question!  At this point no one really knows when Wave 4 will hit.  I would hope that we would see (finally) S2 Spyro, S2 Wrecking Ball, and S2 Drobot along with perhaps another LightCore release (Pop Fizz, Hex, etc).  We still need TRU to drop L-Chill.  I have to wonder if she won't be treated much like L-Trigger Happy.

Ninjini was given away at TRU in Times Square (yes I know, I don't live in New York either...and if I did I would be at work on a Tuesday).  There are all sort of ways to question what they did, why the did it, what they were thinking (if they were thinking), and how it doesn't cater more to scalpers than core fans, and in particular children (how many 8 year olds get to hop in their Civic or hail a taxi and stand outside of TRU in Times Square for 4 hours in the cold while missing Math, History, and Science class?  But I digress...).

Apparently, despite completely botching almost every BIG Skylanders event locally with 2-5 of each "new" and "highly demanded" figure, TRU and Activision stepped up with a LOT of Ninjini figures...most of which are now on ebay for 10x retail.

Again though, regardless of how stupid the timing was, it was a decent gesture and a nice way to kick off the announcement of Skylanders Swap Force and more importantly, their presence at the Toy Fair.

Metallic Blue Chop Chop 2013 Toy Fair Exclusive

And by the way, this year's Toy Fair Exclusive is a wicked-cool looking Chop Chop that I am dubbing "Metallic Blue."  If Activision wants to send one my way, I will gladly accept it and introduce it!  These are hard to find and will likely wind up going on ebay for crazy prices.  The Toy Fair is kind of an "insider" trade show, so unless you are in the business you kind of don't get access to it.  It would be nice if a few of them were kicked around to the core fan base, but oh well.  They really did a nice job on this one imo:

Recently Released

Thumpback and Eye Brawl

I was just on Amazon checking around on some things and if you have not gotten Thumpback or Eye Brawl, it looks like you can order both right now as they will be in stock on February 11th.  Also of note is that GameStop has had them very regularly now (online).  You should be able to land them much easier now than just a few weeks ago.  That said, I've still never seen them in stores aside from when I got them.

Also in-stock right now on Amazon and GameStop is Light Core Shroomboom!  I saw him for the first time in person tonight at Target.  It looked like they had just gotten a shipment of LC Shroomboom and Jet-Vac, as well as the others with their new "I Light Up" stickers.

Tough to Find Early Releases

There was still no signs of popular characters like: Slam Bam, Terrafin, Fright Rider, Chill etc.  I was checking for Cassie and Flameslinger is among those missing in action as of late.

My local Target FINALLY had Giants again (still no Granite Crusher...I truly think I got the last two they had and have had on launch day).  It was of course Swarm, Bouncer, and Crusher.

The only S2 from Wave 3 that seems to be easy to find is Cynder...that is kind of to be expected with most people getting the Starter Pack instead of the Portal Owner's Pack.

The most common in my area remains Sprocket...she is like the Boomer of Giants it seems...just doesn't sell that well.  Stump Smash was around and a very small number of single Pop Fizz characters were present....I would almost swear that the blue is darker than the one I got in a Triple Pack, kind of like what we saw with Stump Smash last time.  At another local store the most common is Drill Sergeant, which oddly enough, is never present at Target...go figure.

Skylanders Giants Playthrough

Well, I had planned to upload videos tonight, that isn't happening...these videos have been ready for a LONG TIME.  I think where we left off I am ready to upload Chapter 13 "The Oracle."  As you may have guessed, this one will consist of several parts.

Past that I have up through Chapter 15 edited and ready to go...

Following those chapters will be the Intro and Heroics on Thumpback and Eye Brawl etc.

The big news of the night in regards to the playthrough is what happened last night.  Finally, ALL of the GIANTS and NEWLANDERS are ready to battle Kaos!  They are still 100% box stock in terms of upgrades, BUT I have them done with all of the Speed and "tough" (ie Drobot, Double Trouble, and Zap) Heroic Challenges.

The next time I record it will probably be the final chapter and battle vs Kaos.

That said, after wrapping up the key heroics last night, I went thru Chapter 8 in my "Hard" file.  I got some key things done...First off, the part with the fiery furnace allows you go go in and back out over-and-over, which allows Hot Dog to complete his top tier quest of chasing birds away.

Speaking of birds, I replayed the level 2 additional times to get Jet-Vac's top tier quest taken care of with all three figures (Jet-Vac, Legendary Jet-Vac, and LC Jet-Vac).

The other cool offering here is the ability to let Fire Element Skylanders take out evil water minions...I accomplished that with every orange based Fire Element Skylander I have...

All-in-all a very productive night!

I plan to eventually make a new blog post covering quests and offering tips etc.  Stay tuned for that.

It got way later than I had intended for it to get before wring this, but I suppose that is how things go for me...

That said, as soon as I get some free time I'll start the next batch of vids (Ch 13, 14, and 15) uploading.  I also hope to record the final battle vs Kaos very soon.  The plan is to do it multiple times (ie box-stock Newlanders, box-stock Giants, castaways (because I like so many of them), and then repeating with upgraded Newlanders and upgraded Giants).  And fear not, I havent forgotten about the Adventure Packs...it is just so nice to do things numerically in-order I am going to take them on AFTER Kaos.

Review of Skylanders Giants 2013 Calendar

What?  Skylanders Giants 2013 Calendar

Where Did You Get It?  Christmas Gift, likely Walmart

What Did it Cost?  $9.88 plus tax

What was Stock Like?  Should be easy to obtain early on...I personally have always had trouble getting calendars if I don't do it in the first 2 weeks of the New Year, but that might just be me, lol.  If it is in print long enough past that the price should drop at most outlets.

Overview

The calendar is a nice size and will look great hanging in your bedroom, the cubicle at work, or your Skylanders shrine.  It measures a conventional 12" Wide and 11" Tall unopened.  When you pin it to the wall you are looking at a 12" Wide x 22" Tall piece of wall getting covered up...

This is a 16 month calendar, which honestly doesn't mean a whole lot if  you are getting it now, lol.  That said, for those that plan ahead and bought it early you got to get a little more of your hard earned cash out of the product.

I like that each month features the previous and coming month in the event you need to glance back or look ahead without turning the page.  The artwork is very nice and each element (8) is represented in the calendar.  The remaining months (4) are covered by the Adventure Packs and their respective characters and magic items.  Here is a run down on the featured characters:

Conclusion

This is a pretty cool calendar for any Skylander fan.  The price is right at under $10 as well.

My biggest gripe comes in the title.  The calendar is dubbed "Skylanders Giants" an dthe cover features Tree Rex's ominous gaze.  However, there are NO GIANTS and NO NEW  SKYLANDERS featured in the calendar, or even highlighted!  This is a bit misleading if you are buying it as a gift and are not "in the know" on all thing Skylanders.  I don't think anyone would be too disappointed, but it certainly doesn't match what you would think having Tree Rex on the cover.

An interesting note is that each featured character and secondary featured character appears in the game as a repose.  The only two featured characters that do not appear as a repose are Ghost Roaster and Sunburn, both from Adventure Packs.

My personal gripe, and a minor one at that, is that Darklight Crypt does not seem like it should be January.  I would have put it with October for Halloween.  To the designer's credit the Undead Element does occupy that turf, but Ghost Roaster just screams Halloween more to me than Cynder and Hex.  I think that duo would have worked fine pretty much anywhere else, even in February as they are both girls.  Again, minor complaint, but valid.  I did like Empire of Ice getting December.  Only other issue is that Slam Bam was with Gill Grunt in January...I personally like that, but since Slam Bam was already featured we could have had Zap in his place at the bottom...Terrafin was not featured at the bottom of Prism Break's month, but rather it was Bash.

Anyway, all-in-all, this is a nice calendar that any fan will love.  If you are buying it as a gift you might want to make sure the recipient isn't expect 12 pages of Tree Rex, Crusher, and Thumpback etc.

Hey Everyone,

Happy New Year!

I have been very busy the last couple of days, but things should get back to normal pretty soon.  I will update this post as I have time to cover an update.  You should see new videos out this week, and possibly a lot of them.  More on that soon.
