Skylanders Ideas: The Variant Discussion
Skylander Ideas:
The Variant Discussion
This is an idea I pitched at E3 2014...I have to say that this one was very well received. Will it be implemented, who knows. It is just as likely as it is unlikely. However, I felt it was worth sharing with the Skylander Community as it would help alleviate one of the frustrations dedicated players/collectors face.
The Issue
So, one of the most common comments, or messages I have received over the years centers around variants. Not necessarily who will be one, how they are selected, or what a good price for them is, but rather something like this, "1ofWiisdom, I have been checking my local stores daily for weeks in hopes of finding _____ Variant and I never found it. I saw other people find it...I tried this last year for ____ Variant. What am I doing wrong? What can I never find any Variants?"
Well, this one is kind of sad to answer. A lot of people remain totally oblivious to how a retail store works. It isn't just happy-go-lucky employees who gleefully stock items they have zero interest in for you to purchase. There are people that work in retail because it is all they can find, they have to (ie high school, college, parents, or someone else who needs the flexible hours a big chain can offer), they want to (ie I am going to start stocking at this store, then work my way up to Assistant Manager, and then eventually open my own chain/franchise), and those who have ulterior motives. You need to be aware of those with ulterior motives.
Not everyone at Toys'R'Us, Target, Best Buy, GameStop, or Walmart is there due to scheduling, it being close to home, or because they aspire to learn the company from the ground-up. Some select their place of employment based on "incentives" and I am not talking stock options, insurance benefits, or 401k. Some people are very well aware of what is collectible, what is hot, what is rare, and what they can sell it for...
Most people with this mind set will do just as you...They come in on weekends, after work, or when they run errands and comb the shelves looking for the rare toy, chase diecast, or in this case, Variant Skylander. In a perfect situation the person who spends the most time in pursuit, would usually wind up the benefactor. The variable here is the employee faction.
Whereas Activision, Matel, or whatever company is cranking out something special with a nod towards their "serious collectors" all of that can halt when the product is intercepted BEFORE it gets to the end user. For a lot of you that report to me how you "try really hard" to find these Variants it has nothing to do with your timing, dedication, or luck...but everything to do with what goes on behind the scenes.
Now, I want to be clear, not all employees do this, and some stores likely have management/ownership in place to prevent this from happening. Others, however, are part of the problem...
You might know the exact time UPS, FedEx, and the Tuesday/Friday trucks hit your local Toys'R'Us. You might be the first person in-line for the big Wave 2 release, and you still may NEVER find a variant. If you haven't already picked up on it, here is what is happening...
We will say Chopper is selected for a Blue Metallic Variant (this is totally theoretical and only for example purposes...plus I find it highly unlikely he'd get a Blue Metallic Variant). Instead of the employee walking the box/boxes over the display the night before, or morning of and one-by-one pulling the Skylanders from the box and shelving them, someone will notice the difference...They will see 5 Choppers that all look alike and 1 that is Blue Metallic. This one gets held back, bought by the employee, and probably 99% of the time hocked on ebay where someone pays ridiculous money for what they should have given $9.99 for...
Another, and more likely example, involves an employee monitoring ebay, fan sites, and forums and learning of Blue Metallic Chopper, GITD Funny Bone, or Crimson Head Rush and then specifically checking the boxes for these characters. Whether they are 1 per Case, 3 per case, or totally at random they will make a point to check EVERYTHING before it hits the shelves. They also involve other employees to help with this (ie to cover their off day etc). This means you have a near ZERO Percent chance of ever finding a variant at that store.
I see people online report this, I see employees brag about it, and I see ebay accounts of pirates who pillage quantities of these things to sell for their personal, financial gain. That is not what the parent company intends, and it is not beneficial to the fan base.
I know, for a fact, this happens locally. There is a very well known lady who works at Walmart for the sole purpose of nabbing "hot toys/items" and then selling them online. She is known at Target, GameStop, and Toys'R'Us. It is people like her that make the "Limit 1 Per Customer" signs a thing of reality. She will use her kids, grandkids, and I'm sure any other friends to go in and buy up the stock to get around these rules. Most stores are even aware of her husband and kids. You should hear the stories I heard about her and the Nintendo Wii at launch back in 2006. She has been doing this for AT LEAST that long and will continue to do so until people quit paying crazy money for what she pirates.
I was also very disappointed in my local TRU when I was invited to their back room by electronics (apparently that happens when you reserve a Nintendo Wii U and they think they "accidentally" sold it) and saw a shopping kart FULL OF SKYLANDER VARIANTS. For those of you that got the Stone Zook and Stone Whirlwind on launch and wonder why I didn't...that would be why. GameStop is known for pulling variants out at their distribution center...They use to randomly ship them, and still might, but they tend to just pack them in some crazy expensive fan bundle.
Basically, what I am getting at is the very stores that should be putting these items out on the shelf, for you and I are holding them back and then pirating them on ebay. Again, not what is intended by the manufacturer, but it is what is going on...
Potential Solutions
So, how can we combat this? What can be done to make it more likely variants wind up in the hands of the end users who are intended to land them? I had two ideas for helping this become the norm...
First, variants could be more subtle. Instead of a cool, translucent green Rip Tide, why not slightly tweak his armor from gold to silver, or make the sword fish a different color? This would not stick out as well, but would still likely be learned and abducted by employees.
My second suggestion, and what was very well received goes like this...That Blue Metallic Chopper I described above? He isn't Blue Metallic anymore...he looks just like the other 5 Choppers in the box. Nothing flashy, fancy, or out of the ordinary...just 6 identical Choppers ready to be shelved.
However, when you get home with that Chopper you just bought, you place it on the portal and Wham-O! "Special Chopper" appears when you boot up the game! The employee didn't know, scalpers don't know, people pillaging the shelves for a "different looking" Skylander don't know, and ultimately YOU didn't know until you got home and put him on the portal. I realize employees could stick them all on the Portal or something, but that is a bit tougher to validate than simply slicing a box open and leaving it in the break room to buy and sell after your shift.
Is it perfect? No. Does it take away a cool looking variant form? Yes. But they would be just as collectible given the end circumstances. I know this would open the doors for people online to sell a regular Chopper advertised as a "Special Chopper," but the auction sites help hold people accountable AND as I've said for 3 years now, you have no business paying $100s for something that cost someone $10. I know it is your money and you can do with it what you want, but no one intends for the variants to turn into someone high dollar thrill ride. It is supposed to be players running in to look for a certain character and happening to see a varaint. That planned joy has all but been eliminated by the greed of employees and lack of managerial oversight (or plain and simple corruption). For those who argue the "value" would be hurt with identical paint jobs, I would suggest making them in lesser runs...The concept was brought about, just as with all toys/collectibles, to be a nod for the diehards..Those who comb the shelves hoping to get lucky, and this would help keep that option open.
In my mind, it is a far better option than simply continuing on and letting corrupt managers, greedy employees, and maniacal ebay pirates the luxury of easily intercepting variants and making ridiculous money off of them.
Your Thoughts
Let me know what you think of this idea, and if you have any of your own. How many Variants have you found locally, in the store, as intended? Do you pay big bucks for rare figures on eBay? Do you know of your local stores "puling" variants before they even hit the shelves?

Toy Fair Exclusive Red Metallic Dune Bug
What: Skylanders SWAP Force Exclusive Edition Toy Fair 2014 Dune Bug
Where Did You Get It: Special Delivery
What is Stock Like: Limited to Toy Fair 2014
Wow! My Wednesday at the office just got a lot better...
FedEx swung by with the 2014 Toy Fair Exclusive Red Metallic Dune Bug! The technical name is as listed out above "Exclusive Edition Toy Fair 2014 Dune Bug," but most will refer to him as Toy Fair Dune Bug, or Red Metallic Dune Bug etc. The color looks great, but it is really one of those ones that needs to be seen in person...Judge for yourself:
In game, he registers as:
It is important to remember, these were intended for promotional use...Something to entice folks to visit the Skylanders section at the Toy Fair and something "physical" to send home to always look back on and remember the display and series.
I know a lot of you have stated your allegiance to Dune Bug and think he is a great Skylander. I won't lie...anytime that is the case (ie your favorite gets a variant of any sort), it is a great addition to your collection. At the same time, I have to caution folks not to spend crazy money to acquire something...
Everyone knows how big a fan I am of Terrafin and Warnado. There is a GITD Warnado that I've never seen, held, or thought of buying because of the crazy price. My life has gone on just fine. If Terrafin ever got a really cool variant I would love to find it, but if I came up empty I wouldn't think of spending a couple hundred to acquire it. You have to be smart with your money and keep it all in perspective.
If you do pop for one that is sure to come up on ebay etc., I hope you get a fair deal. He does look awesome and this is really the first time I have seen a metallic in person, let alone in red. I don't think anyone would be disappointed in the alternative decoration here...it is very impressive.
Hopefully this post has helped to showcase Toy Fair Dune Bug for you. If you are bummed out about how hard he will be to acquire I can offer good news that Nitro Freeze Blade is coming soon along with some special Easter themed Skylander singles that include Fryno, Punk Shock, and of course in-game variant Spring Time Trigger Happy!

The red coloring is definitely a metallic red...It is almost like an anodized finish, although I'm not sure how many of you deal with anodized aluminum fittings. It is a deep, vibrant red...It is not maroon, yet I feel it is closer to that than "lipstick red." You can get a decent feel for it via the pictures and video, but it really would have to be seen with your own eyes to accurately pick up on the color.
The entire figure is covered in the red paint...Tip of the top, staff, hands, all the way down to the base.

Checking out TRU Exclusive Skylander Special Edition Gill Grunt
What? Special Edition Gill Grunt (Series 2 Pose)
Where Did You Get It? Toys'R'Us Promotion
What Did It Cost? FREE via Promotion
What Was Stock Like? Limited, Have not seen him in Stores
I received my Special Edition Gill Grunt from Toys'R'Us today...It was shipped via a padded envelope from Toys'R'Us. I got an e-mail January 17th with a code to redeem him via their launch window promotion. You essentially just had to spend $100 on Skylanders SWAP Force merchandise between launch day and the close of the year to qualify.
The offer changed course several times and was postponed once or twice, but nonetheless, TRU delivered a special Gill Grunt. The odd thing is that the Special Edition Gill Grunt figure in question here isn't Series 3 Anchors Away Gill Grunt, but rather Series 2 Gill Grunt. Not a big deal, but it would have been nice to have things line up perfectly.
That said, I happen to like his Series 2 pose the best so I won't complain too much!
The coloring has been dubbed anything from green to green metallic, but I think I will stick with "Fishy Emerald" as I called it in the video :-)
Fishy Emerald, or whatever you want to call it, actually fits Gill Grunt and this pose very, very well in my opinion. I believe he will follow standard "chase" variant format where he will show up as a standard S2 Gill Grunt in the game, but likely at Level 5 with 2,000 or so Coins in the bank...I will verify this and you can see it in the SWAP Force Introduction videos.
I have heard of a few folks having trouble getting their claim heard by TRU, but they are honestly not that bad to work with...Keep trying, stay calm, and be polite...it will get you much farther than being irate. If you truly qualified there should be no issue, eventually getting your SEGG.
That said, if you are a collector, operate on the "Keep one sealed and open another" methodology, or just need 2 for kids etc., TRU claims you can find them in stores and you can order them online.
For what it is worth, I have yet to see SE Gill Grunt in stores and no employees report seeing him, or being aware of his arrival.
I mention that first, because I have had numerous people get their SE Gillman just fine, but found that he arrived in poor shape thanks to the bubble mailer/padded envelope and delivery service, mostly the latter. Mine came in relatively good condition aside from a slightly folded upper area...which I will take over dented plastic, or a loose figure.
Obviously, if SE GG hits store shelves, you can take your pick and get one in mint condition. However, if that does not happen and you have to, or choose to order one in, my advice is to get several figures or triple packs. Here is why: First off, when you spend $49 or more you get free freight. Second, the additional figures, or Triple Pack, Adventure Pack, Battle Pack etc. will force your order to ship in a box. I will caution that boxes are not fool proof, especially the cheap, thin ones, but they are more substantial than an individual padded envelope.
If you elect to order in a 2nd, or get your first SE Gill Grunt, here is the link:

Skylander Hunting Surprise: Purple Metallic Wrecking Ball and QuickDraw Rattle Shake Frito-Lay Bags
Wow...
November is off to a GREAT start!
First off, I was making my usual rounds while running errands tonight and wanted to stop by Toys'R'Us for two reasons: First, I wanted to see if Legendary Zoo Lou (11/3 Street Date) was out, and if so, if I could purchase him. Second, I was hoping to find some of the Frito-Lay promotional Variety Packs for Quick Draw Rattle Shake!
Well, neither of those panned out at Toys'R'Us.
However, I did find one (and then several more) of the Skylanders Giants Legendary Triple Packs that I kno a lot of you are after...It has L-Jet Vac, L-Ignitor, and L-Slam Bam. The first one I found, had something else unique...sitting on the peg to the left was none other than Purple Metallic Wrecking Ball!
Yep...PURPLE METALLIC WRECKING BALL! I was shocked to say the least! This is the first time I've found a "chase" variant since Gold Flameslinger back in the day...
I didn't risk taking a pic in the event someone else spotted him...So I plucked him up and began looking for a 2nd Skylander (BOGO40%). I nearly went with a 2nd Scorp or Rip Tide, but held off in order to pick up the Topps Collector Card Starter Pack (TRU Exclusive) for $9.99. This turned out to NOT quality for the BOGO40%, but who knew?! I didn't, but now you do...Should have gone for that Scorp or Rip Tide...oh well.
This Purple Metallic Wrecking Ball kind of makes up for all of that! I'm not sure how he "broke" thru the system, but he was right there front-and-center staring at me...Especially since his interior packaging is broken and it casts him at a 45 degree angle. He was literally about to fall of the peg as well. Before you ask, YES I did scan everywhere for the other Purple Metallics, lol.
You can check out the Topps Collector Card Starter Pack Opening and Review in the next blog post...
Now, on to the grocery store...Shockingly, my local store had the Quick Draw Rattle Shake Promo bags! I saw the Classic Mix over in produce (don't ask) and grabbed it. On the chip aisle they just had a few...I checked and the codes seemed to be the same for roughly 8-10 bags and then change...
I found a Classic Mix with a different code and grabbed it too...if you were unaware, the codes are on the FRONT of the bag, right with the "Use By" date.
I will get a video up outlining that contest here shortly...
Also of note...Target had Wave 2 Skylanders! I, oddly enough, saw quite a few Fire Kraken, several Grilla Drilla, and 1 Night Shift...No Boom Jet anywhere.
That said, this was a killer night in terms of Skylander hunting! Next stop is, of course, TRU on Sunday for Legendary Zoo Lou.

Nitro Magna Charge Double Packs Exclusive to Target for Skylanders SWAP Force
I had speculated on this some time back, and now the answers have emerged...
While we had GameStop boasting the Dark Edition Starter Pack, we recently saw Walmart land Enchanted Hoot Loop. We already know Toys'R'Us is getting the Legendaries once more, so that left Target...
The cycle did not disappoint as BOTH SWAP Force Double Packs featuring Nitro Magna Charge will appear at the retailer! It remains to be seen if these will be as limited as Granite Crusher, a bit more lenient like Jade Flashwing, or easy picking like most Walmart specials...My advice, as usual, is get it while you can and avoid being caught an issue where you can't obtain it for retail.
The Nitro Magna Charge Double Pack Retails for $29.99 and comes in two flavors:

Nitro Magna Charge and Rattle Shake
Nitro Magna Charge and Free Ranger
Note the placement of the "Only at Target" designation...This follows suit with what we have seen recently where labels have been printed with the packaging.
The cool thing here is that Nitro Magna Charge remains the same...So, you can simply pick which character you want.
This was obviously set up for those that buy a console starter pack. Why? The console starter packs include Wash Buckler and Magna Charge...That means you can literally add this Double Pack and be in business.
However, if you plan to pick up the 3DS Version, you will likely be disappointed as it features none other than Free Ranger and Rattle Shake.
But, remaining optimistic, those of us getting the console and 3DS versions, can take solstice in this...
Free Ranger has a Legendary form coming at some point, and with Rattle Shake's potential alter ego, or variant form unknown (or simply not happening), we can use this Double Pack to land a 2nd Rattle Shake, as opposed to winding up with 3 Free Rangers...That is my plan anyway.
The price of $29.99 doesn't do a lot given SWAP Force Skylanders will retail for $14.99, but it is hard to complain with a special figure included.
I am left wondering if Amazon will have anything "special" here right off the bat...I guess we will have to wait and see.

Unboxing Pokemon Rumble U Figures: Shiny Pikachu, Deoxys, and Lucario
This was the second half (Part 3 Overall) of our launch day haul from Thursday, August 29th, 2013!
I will archive this unboxing in the original post, which contains more info on the game and NFC communication, as well as a complete character list. You can check it out here:

The three Pokeballs we picked up this time had the following characters:
-Shiny Pikachu!! Yep, that explains me wondering why it wasn't yellow, lol.
-Deoxys (Normal Forme)
-Lucario
I grabbed all three of these on Launch Day as well...we just divided them up into 2 separate videos to speed things up...mainly because my Nephew had to get home and do some homework.
That said, I was stoked to learn that the coloring wasn't off, but that we had actually landed a Shiny Pikachu! From what I understand these are very hard to come by and as of this point in time we only know of Shiny Pikachu, Shiny Eeveee, and Shiny Genesect. Here is the video:

Skylanders SWAP Force Dark Edition Starter Pack Exclusive at GameStop
Well, just as the post late, last night alluded to, we got our BIG news on the "Dark Secret" Skylanders Game had for us...
The big reveal you ask? The GameStop Exclusive, Dark Edition Starter Pack:
As you can see, this is your standard Starter Pack amplified with darkness (and a dash or two of Awesome).
Rather than just offer up Wash Buckler, Blast Zone, and Ninja Stealth Elf in their dark forms, we got the addition of Dark Mega Ram Spyro, and Dark Lockjaw (or is that Slobber Tooth?) We also have what is dubbed the "Mega Character Poster." I would love to know more about this...Is it simply bigger, will it include all of the potential variants etc? More details would be nice, but a surprise would be just as cool.
The questions I have are pretty simple past that:
Is it Dark Lockjaw as indicated in the press release, or is Dark Slobber Tooth? We saw this character in leaks a few weeks ago, and more recently a box was revealed with Slobber Tooth. I'm inclined to believe this is Dark Slobber Tooth and that perhaps this release was crafted prior to the name change. However, it could be that Lockjaw is correct...maybe this character will have a standard form name (Slobber Tooth), and a different Dark form name...My money is still on Dark Slobber Tooth, but we will see.
Next up, is it Dark Spyro and Dark Stealth Elf, or Dark Mega Ram Spyro and Dark Ninja Stealth Elf? I, once again, lean more towards the adjectives being in place. We already have Dark Spyro. The S3 Skylanders (and S2 returnees from the original Giants cast) all have adjectives in front of their names. This will help fans, parents, and everyone really keep the figures straight. It only makes sense for this to apply here, thus creating Dark Mega Ram Spyro and Dark Ninja Stealth Elf.
I know many of you wonder about the available systems for this Starter Pack. I currently do not know if it will be available for PS4 or Xbox One. I don't see it being announced for the 3DS due to the differing line up in the Starter Pack...Plus, it already boasts Volcanic Eruptor, who follows in line with Dark Spyro and Punch Pop Fizz. If not for the different characters (Rattle Shake and Free Ranger).
That said, what we do get for sure is:
-SWAP Force Game
-SWAP Force Portal of Power
-Mega Character Poster
-5 Sticker Sheets with Secret Codes
-5 Trading Cards
-5 Skylanders
-Bragging rights, value, and a unique collection!
The Dark Edition Starter Pack is up for pre-order now and retails for $99.99.
Let's take a look at the 5 Dark Skylanders Included in the Starter Pack:
The big reveal you ask? The GameStop Exclusive, Dark Edition Starter Pack:
Let's cover the details:

All-in-all, this looks to be a great setup! I plan to pick one up, likely for the Wii U.
You can pick up your Dark Edition Starter Pack at your local GameStop, or here:

Skylanders Giants Unboxing Gnarly Tree Rex
What? Gnarly Tree Rex, Life Element, Giant
Where Did You Get It? Walmart
What Did It Cost? $14.96 plus tax
What Is Included? Gnarly Tree Rex, Stat Card, Sticker Sheet with Webcode
What Was Stock Like? This store had around 7 or 8
What Lights Up? Eyes (Green!) and Photosynthesis Canon (Orange!)
Will He Be Hard to Find? Currently unknown, but I would get him now based on what we have seen with other in-game variants.
Expect the unexpected my friends! One of the things that haunted many collectors and Skylander fanatics was Gnarly Tree Rex. He wasn't like a Granite Crusher or Scarlet Ninjni...Well he is, but not in the sense of availability. Since launch, Gnarly has been available, but with one BIG catch. Here in the US you had to buy the special Wii Bundle. You essentially had to shell out around $150 for a console that has a successor on the market to get the special Starter Pack.
A few people did it...More bit the bullet and paid a higher price for Gnarly, but much less than the console bundle. Some, like myself, refused to do either.
I have a Wii (which I love), a WiiU, and despite really like the color blue, and thinking Gnarly looked great, I couldn't make myself shell out the cash to get him. I was tempted when I saw the bundle advertised for $99 a few times. At that price, you really can't go wrong. That said, it is still a lot of money and I never did it. I've said many times not to stress about variants, or rare figures...and certainly don't blow your bank chasing one down. Think how many games, or regular Skylanders you could get for $150? It just wasn't practical for most.
Well, much to most everyone's surprise, Gnarly Tree Rex showed up in Single Pack Form this past week! Definitely unexpected by most Portal Masters. While it is a tough pill to swallow for those that shelled out $40 or so for Gnarly (or got the console bundle and dealt with selling it off), everyone else is quite happy.
I, like most of you, had just relegated it off. I was fine not having Gnarly Tree Rex. Despite that status, it still ate away knowing things weren't "100% Complete." Livable scenario? Sure. But those little things are annoying.
Now, for the price of $15 myself and those like me have landed the previously illusive Gnarly Tree Rex!!
With his appearance coming largely unexpected, you can still swoop in and land him early. And that may be important. If he winds up like the other Giants we have seen (Granite Crusher, Scarlet Ninjini, heck, even Legendary Bouncer as of late), you will want to act sooner rather than later. As word gets out, scalpers will no doubt to buy up stock to hock on ebay.
Really, the only folks that would have been looking this time of year are the dedicated variant hunters and those still looking for S2 Drobot, Spyro, or Ninjini etc.
All that aside, this is great news for all of us and something I suggest you take advantage of while you can!
Here are a few pictures:
Basic Info
Gnarly Tree Rex
Life Element, Giant
Slogan: "Be Afraid of the Bark!"
Card Stats
Power/Strength: 140/150
Defense/Armor: 130/150
Speed/Agility: 55/150
Luck: 55/150
Totals: 380/600
Conclusion
Gnarly Tree Rex showing up in single pack form is a very, very pleasant surprise. Not knowing what kind of quantities he is being released in, I would advise you pick him up ASAP if you plan to add him to your collection. He looks great, is very well detailed, and as a bonus, even lights up differently! Good luck!

Skylanders E3 2013 Exclusive Copper Metallic Hot Dog In-Game, Chase Variant Status Confirmed
Well, you saw me retrieve E3 Dog from the fortress of my Power A Skylanders Giants Travel Tote Upper Compartment and Travel A Game Pack in mint condition...
We checked out the packaging, the printed "exclusive" shot, and the "not for resale" bottom end. We then scanned the figure to get the best light on what I deem a copper metallic paint.
What we didn't do with that first review, aside from actually unbox him, is see how he registers in game. Would he be like your garden variety chase variant, regular Hot Dog, or would he be special beyond belief with a fully maxed chip? Well, this video provides the answer:
As you can see, here is what we learned:
2013 E3 Exclusive Copper Metallic Hot Dog registers as:
-Special Hot Dog on the character intro screen
-An actual addition the list (ie +1 Fire Skylander and +1 Overall Collection)
-Level 5
-2100 Coins
So the answer is...E3 Dog registers as a typical chase variant (think Silver Dino-Rang, Gold Flameslinger, GITD, Stone, etc). And as expected, he shows up in game just like regular Hot Dog.
Again, this showcases why the blog is sometimes better than the video...You have your answer and it took just a few seconds to read...oh well, most prefer videos. I am super tired, but also still being powered by the excitement of E3 and all the great content I still have yet to show you!

Skylanders E3 2013 Exclusive Copper Metallic Hot Dog
For avid collectors and rabid fans of the Skylanders franchise, you all know of the in-game variants, chase variants, and some insanely hard to find variants...variants like this year's E3 Exclusive Hot Dog!
There hasn't really been an official name given to this rendition of Hot Dog as best I know...Take a look at the video and tell me what you think:
I have seen bronze, copper, color change, color shift, etc. In addition to gaming and Skylanders, my other big hobby is cars. With that in mind I would deem this T5 Hot Dog. Since virtually no one would understand that designation I went with Copper Metallic Hot Dog...it just looks like the old Copper Metallic paint to me, which you can see on this 69 A12 Superbee:
I would love to unbox this figure and see what it looks like and if it does in fact shift colors...for now, I am content with Copper Metallic. The figure looks great. I do not know who selects the figure and paint scheme, but this (just like Chrome Spyro from 2012) just works. While the thought of a copper colored Hot Dog may not appeal to most, once you see it, particularly in person, you will change your tone.
Here are a few comparison shots:
In order to win E3 Hot Dog you simply have to spin a SwapForce wheel with "Wash" that you obviously have to land with "Buckler." If so a bell sounds and you are presented your Hot Dog.
The line was INSANE. This alone means that if anyone was going just to scalp they are probably missing out on making money elsewhere due to the lost time simply standing in line...No leads or shelf raiding applies here! Everyone plays be the same rules...Furthermore, the staff is well versed in policing things...The line begins back on the side of Activision's big presentation theater. Once you hit Check Point 1, you have to wait until you and a few more can advance to Check Point 2. At CP2 you will be canned if you are a recognized winner.
If you continue you'll be greeted by the nice staff inside, who are very good at identifying repeat winners etc.
I'm sure some will get into the hands of scalpers and a few are probably still working the system around all the increased obstacles, but the added obstructions to someone pillaging 5-10 figures to sell online is a nice nod to everyone else!
I spun the wheel twice and never won...I did get close though...I spent some time I could have been outside the booth, waiting in line to try again, getting info on the 3DS game!
Nonetheless, I feel very fortunate to have walked off with such a rare Skylander from such a prestigious event! The color really does fit accent Hot Dog's personality!

I love what they did this year...In the past it was my understanding that folks could show up and play the demo and get a figure...many of which probably came back to a different attendant and racked up their ebay stock. It is still possible this year, but not likely...

Scarlet Ninjini at Amazon.com
As promised, I said I would let you know when Scarlet Ninjini popped up on Amazon.com as an ACTUAL LISTING, not just a link to a scalper's $30 bounty etc.
Well, here it is:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CE58FPG/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
Please note that when she sells out, it may revert to the next available listing, BUT as soon as Amazon restocks it will be reflected with the $14.99 amount.
So, if you missed out due to scalpers at Target, disappointment at Toys'R'Us, or a store pulling the "can't sell til Tuesday" etc, this is your chance to land her NOW.
Good luck!

Unboxing Skylanders BattleGrounds with Royal Double Trouble
What? Skylanders BattleGrounds with GameStop Exclusive Royal Double Trouble
Where Did You Get It? GameStop
What Did It Cost? $39.99 plus tax
Any Specials? FREE Sidekick with Skylander purchases of $19.99+ thru 5/31/13
What is Included? Download Code for Game, Bluetooth Portal of Power, USB Cable, (3) AA Batteries, S2 Cynder, Jet-Vac, Platinum Treasure Chest, Royal Double Trouble, Poster, Collector Cards, and Sticker Sheets
I finally pulled the trigger and landed Royal Double Trouble! As you should know, I am a pretty big Double Trouble fan...I had held off getting him for the collection due to not having a way to play the game (sidenote: I still don't have a way to play the game). So why pick it up now you ask? Simple...Sidekicks!
INSERT VIDEO WHEN THE FEATURE IS BACK AND FUNCIONAL...COUGH.
GameStop has a promotion running where you get a Sidekick with $19.99 or more in Skylanders merchandise...this likely varies by store in terms of how they enforce it (ie to the letter of the law, Starter Pack=4, 1 Giant=1, $20+ on 4 separate purchases etc). I wasn't sure (based on their internet ad) if it would work with the iOS Starter Pack or not...so I asked.
The local store I go to said they hadn't been selling Skylanders in a long time and that no one had even asked about the Sidekicks...guess that was good news for me! I picked up Skylanders BattleGrounds AND got all 4 Sidekicks!! For what it is worth, this is good business...I have bought a TON of Skylanders and games from them in the past, most of the employees know me, and it is a nice gesture that helps to ensure when the next round of Skylanders, or hot game drops I will give them first shot. Still, that was a pleasant surprise...
With the Sidekicks known to be secured, I could fully justify the purchase...however, as I held BattleGrounds in my hands I realized it was actually a good deal.
Let's view it on a line item basis:
-Royal Double Trouble $10
-Jet-Vac $10
-Cynder $10
-Game, Portal of Power, Platinum Treasure Chest >$10...that covers it!
In my case here is how I was able to justify it:
-Royal Double Trouble: I am afraid they might eventually discontinue him (think along the lines of Walmart's GITD Starter Pack etc)...People have been hocking him on the net for close to $40 since it came out...Just getting him is justification for most...I am not most.
-Cynder: Since I got both of my Starter Packs (Wii and 3DS) in the Walmart Exclusive GITD Versions I never got the real "purple" Cynder. A minor issue, but it makes her $10 of the purchase price very valid.
-Platinum Treasure Chest: It is unique and registers separate...Most would stick $10 here, but I'm thrifty so we will go with $5.
-Jet-Vac: I really like him...Granted with LC Jet-Vac and Legendary Jet-Vac I didn't have to have him, but I'll still call it $10...We are now at $35 out of the $39.99.
-BattleGrounds the game...yeah, haven't mentioned it until now! Obviously if you are an Apple person, this alone justifies the purchase. I am more of an Android guy and currently have no way of playing BattleGrounds...However, I am smart enough to know it would be worth at least $10 to me as I enjoy the Sykanders franchise...I can give it to my Nephew, buy a compatible device and play it myself, or sell the download code for $5-10 and use that to buy S2 Drobot. This fully covers the purchase price.
-Bluetooth Portal of Power, USB Cable, and Batteries: The last two are fully functional with any device...The Portal should work for desktop, serve as a backup for the Wii and Wii U, and get me, or someone else going with an iOS device. We have now exceeded the purchase price.
-FREE Sidekick: I was thinking I'd get at least 1 (maybe 2...which is what I needed) with this purchase...big perk! My plan if I only got 1 was to go back to the store when Scarlet was in stock, buy her and another figure to cover the 2nd one...The fact I got a full set was unexpected and awesome! (And if anyone from corporate GameStop sees this...think about it: The Sidekicks are a promotion to get people in to buy Skylanders...the employees both mentioned how they hadn't sold Skylanders in awhile and no one had asked about the promo...They know me as a good customer...Guess what that means for this branch of your store? When Scarlet resurfaces...I am buying her there. When LC Pop Fizz, LC Hex, and S2 Drobot surface I'll be purchasing them from this store...Similarly, when I want to pre-order or hunt for a game, they get first shot...It was a smart move from the folks down at the bottom of the ladder...Look at my reaction and tell me they did something wrong).
And there you go...made sense to me, hope it makes sense to you!
If I don't wind up with a way to play the game, I'll likely give it to my Nephew (provided his iPod can play it...if not I think he will be getting a way to play it soon enough).
With this logic, I probably should have bought it when it came out, but oh well...Waiting paid off in the sense that I got to cash in on the Sidekick promo! Last time they were out there was nothing I needed...go figure.
If I do wind up with a way to play the actual game, I'll post up my thoughts on it...Nonetheless, Whisper Elf, Gill Runt, regular S2 Cynder, AND Royal Double Trouble have now officially joined the team!
If you are in need of a Sidekick, or the complete set, consider picking up BattleGrounds as a way to land the GameStop Exclusive Royal Double Trouble, the Platinum Treasure Chest, AND a Sidekick, or two, or three, or four!
Once I get some free time I'll record Royal Double Trouble's Intro to the Playthrough AND take a look at the Platinum Treasure Chest...I'm curious as to what it dishes out and more importantly if I can use it and the regular treasure chest in the same level...I think it should work and that makes a lot of "cents."

Scarlet Ninjini Magically Appearing at Target May 19th, 2013
I have gotten reports and solid confirmation that the much anticipated Scarlet Ninjini will finally be making her debut at Target on Sunday, May 19th, 2013.
This follows suit with Jade Flaswhing and the earlier released Granite Crusher, but Scarlet will not be exclusive to Target. In fact, my local GameStops (and those near the distribution center) had her on the shelves Thursday-Friday, May 9th-10th).
I again have to stress that the Target Exclusives can be hard to locate and find stocked at many stores and in many regions. As I've said before, I saw Granite Crusher at my local store on release day and never again...Jade was only seen twice at my local Target. I realize some folks have store that handle more inventory etc, but for everyone else (or those with scalpers) they are much harder to come by than say your in-game variant from Walmart or Legendaries at Toys'R'Us.
Bottom line, if you want her...I'd act fast. She should be available at multiple outlets, but the dates are uncertain for Walmart, Amazon, etc...Given how the last few exclusives and in-game variants have been I would treat her as if she was a store exclusive and move fast. If Target is your planned means of landing the magic ninja genie, I would go as early as possible. Granite, Jade, Molten Hot Dog, etc have all been relatively tough to land. They do get re-stocked eventually, but there are still plenty of people who have yet to land Granite that have been trying since launch!
I also hope you had enough faith in me to not go out on a limb and buy her from Amazon Germany...If that was the only option, I might have done it...No point paying extra freight and having to wait all that time (I know a few that ordered her and have STILL yet to get her in hand).
I will keep you posted on any other news breaks regarding Scarlet or the other yet to be released Skylanders. Similarly, if a link goes up online I'll post it...That is your safest bet to avoid a potential disappointment at your local store...
Stay tuned and happy hunting!

Order Molten Hot Dog from Walmart.com 2/23/2013
Well, I just wrapped up Chapters 12 and 13 on the Skylanders Giants Hard File and am seriously considering just recording mass upgrades on the Newlanders and Giants, BUT that is another story....what you care about at 6 AM is simple...
Molten Hot Dog is now up for order on Walmart.com for "Site-to-Store" or "Home Delivery."
As you know, I mentioned in the Weekly Update, that MHD was already on the west coast and making his way east...
I checked both Thursday and Friday night and we still had nothing.
If you want to avoid the rush, or potential scalper sprees, you can order from the comfort of home...
I still stand firm that this will be east to come by, but some people sleep better with peace of mind...
Anyway, here is the link:

Eye Brawl and Thumpback in the Near Future!
Hey Everybody!
How about some REALLY awesome news to start 2013? Well, this should suffice.
While skimming the net today I found 2 very good leads on the potential release of both Thumpback, the Water Element Giant, and Eye Brawl, the Undead Element Giant.
Before calling my local GameStop I checked online to make sure the release date on the Scorpion Striker Battle Pack with Hot Dog and Zap was in fact pushed back to 1/9/2013. That sadly turned out to be the case and I got confirmation when I called in...
However, when on GameStop.com I found the packaging proof had been added for BOTH Thumpback and Eye Brawl!!
This is a big deal because that is what GameStop has done in the past before a new character was up for sale...You can also note that they have yet to add the Wave 3 Single Packs to that coveted list, so I am thinking it is imminent that we will see both Giants very soon.
Checking around elsewhere, I turned up on Amazon link to Thumpback...with the packaging proof, yet another encouraging sign!
As of right now I do not know solid dates, but I will update this post as the info trickles in...
Here are some helpful links:

Personally I am more excited for Eye Brawl, but I know the vast majority seems to want Thumpback.
Stay tuned for updates and good luck landing the new Giants!
*Update 1/2/13 5 AM (so much for getting to bed earlier in 2013): It looks like several sources are saying we will see Thumpback and Eye Brawl hit on the 9th and that we can expect Ninjini mid-to-late January. I obviously can not confirm this and would still call it speculation, but they have to come out some time, right?!
I also want to point out that there remains a good chance we could see some straggling characters like Wrecking Ball or Spyro in their S2 repose hit the shelves.
I'm still waiting on the assignment of any Triple Packs, although at this point it is likely I'd only be up for the tail end of them (could see all S2 in a few)...
I will update again as new or confirmed info arrives.
Updated 1/4/2013 to add Walmart Links.

Weekly Update 6/21/2012 and Translucent Red Drill Sergeant
Hey Everyone,
My apologies for not getting to update this much lately...it seemed like the last two weeks were just chock full of thunderstorms. It was one year ago that I got the new computer...I like to think I'm doing it a favor not running it with the ridiculous lightning we have had lately. That said, the storm pattern passes and it is just hott...yeah, hot with two "t"s hott. Really, it is that bad.
But hey, summer is officially here so what can you really expect...
Anyway, where to begin?
Skylanders Update
Ok, I have a few pics from my scrounging around. I will try to add them soon. I have not found anything new in stores, but did tonight...
You can read about it here {Yeah, right here, lol}
Translucent Red Drill Sergeant
Yep, you read right...And oh how I heartily laugh at the impecable timing. I just recorded a video for Blue Bash and casually mentioned we might see a translucent red or green (I still think that would be killer with Stump Smash or Zook), and then as I am waiting for the video to render I come across the SkylandersGame Retweet of a portal master who found a Translucent Red Drill Sergeant. I know I'll get grilled in the video for it...somehow people that comment seem to not read descriptions or blogs, or do and then just arm themselves with ammunition to add to their "all knowing" state...fabulous.
That said, check it out:
Note the "Only at Walmart" sticker. You all know how I feel about the "Only at Walmart" Drill Sergeant and "Only at Target" Whirlwind issue. You have to assume, especially given Blue Bash being a TRU Exclusive, that it only makes sense Whirlwind would get a translucent version.
I have to say, I am not a fan of how they crank out multiple versions of the same Skylanders. We already had a Gold Drill Sergeant...I'd much rather have had a translucent red Ignitor or some other character that doesn't already have a variant, but oh well. The red does not look good in the pic, it looks pale. That said, Translucent Blue Bash looked pale to me in pics, but looks awesome in person...I'll give the color the benefit of the doubt.
The biggest news with the unveiling of Translucent Red Drill Sergeant is simply speculation. That's right...SPECULATION. I just said it seems likely we see a translucent Whirlwind for Target. What about doing Translucent Green? Maybe a Translucent Orange Drobot? Yeah, the options are endless, and so are the potential release dates. This goes along with what I said all along about looking for Crystal/Glow-in-the-Darks....it makes you keep checking stock and hunting....just staying connected to the ritual in case you get lucky. This is a nice nod for collectors, but I do wish we had a wider variety of "variants" as opposed to certain Skylanders getting multiple forms etc.
Skylanders Playthrough
Last night (June 21st, 2012) I recorded the Legendary Skylanders Upgrades and Gameplay in Quicksilver Vault. I also took care of the "You didn't do the Golden Yamato Blast" crowd by doing it several times at the ruins and in the level. That is really, for what it is worth, the end of the main uploads to the blind playthrough. All I can really upload now is just taking multiples down their other path and then comparing the two...which I may very well do.
Skylanders Blog Posts
Within the week you should see two new posts: My Favorite Skylanders and My Upgrade Path Suggestions. Both will be pretty simple, but will give you an idea of who I like and why, as well as some insights on upgrade paths if you are debating what to choose.
Skylanders Project
I do have one more thing planned. I will have to see how people respond to it, but if it goes over well I will see it out to the end...I think a lot of you will enjoy it, despite being less than perfect. More to come very soon!
Next Project
As most of you know, I have recorded quite a bit of the Mario Kart Wii Playthrough. I even have a few of the videos ready to upload. You should see them before too long.
That said, I have 2 other games going simultaneously. One I started to take a break from MKW...I had horrible audio lag on the game end that really screwed up the recording...It is the worst I've ever had. That said, it will make the commentary not sync at all. Furthermore, to "re-do" that portion, I kind of have to start over...That isn't horrible since it happened early on, BUT it would also make this segment more of a rehash as opposed to totally blind, which I like.
With that in mind, last night, kind of out of the blue, I just decided to start recording something else...it should go quick and I might alternate uploading Mario Kart Wii and this particular title. All I will say is it is on the Wii, pretty new, and will probably either be loved or hated...Feel free to comment with your guesses, lol.

There is actually quite a bit of news to post up, but I am going to wait.
I do want to remind you to check out the Mario Tennis Open QR Code Post I made and the Skylanders: Giants Post I created just earlier this week.
Also, the most recent blog poll closes today. It is of course just asking what you do with your Skylanders Packaging. With it expiring, you know I will posting something new...but what? This may very well tie in with something posted above...
Stay tuned!
