Sklanders Trap Team Research: High Five Upgrade Paths and Attack Damage Numbers

High Five was a split character for me.  On one hand I was looking forward to him because he was a dragonfly and I thought that could bring a lot to the table and his aesthetics are unique and colorful.  Then, on the other side, he was the Frito Lay promo Skylander…and I’m not a fan of their promotions, lol.  That said, the more I have played with High Five the more he has grown on me!

Box Stock he isn’t the most impressive character, but often these are the very ones who wind up with great upgrade paths.  His primary attack, which sadly never gets directly addressed, deals 23-34, but it is spammable and he maintains mobility…That makes it offset a bit, but a slight increase would have been appreciated.  Buzz Dash is a typical quick dash move and attack combo.  High Five quickly darts away, or into an enemy and deals 44-66.

Base Upgrades

Poison Cloud is an offspring of the primary attack.  After your Poison Pellet hits at 23-34 the Poison Cloud forms and lasts roughly 8 seconds.  It seems to deal both 8-12 and 16-24.  I am thinking it does this based on proximity or a series of hits, but in the given time there was no definitive answer.  Fly Slam is High Five’s tertiary attack and it really sets the table for what is to come!  You essentially jump up and do 20-30 damage and then slam down to deal 90-135.  Buzz Charge takes Buzz Dash up a level.  If you tap your secondary attack, you dash at 44-66, but if you hold it for roughly 1.5 seconds, High Five darts forward and delivers a much more menacing 136-204.  The best thing is he auto deploys.  You don’t have to look for a shimmer, glisten, or change in appearance…he just goes when the time is up!  Buzzerker Overdrive is where things get interesting…If you hold your tertiary attack button down, you begin to spin rapidly around your targets.  In this time ,a full charge will deal 20-30 10 times AND THEN smash down a devastating 334-501!  The catch here is that you lose HP while charging this up.  You can stop before the 10 hits and 334 and the damage seems to be somewhat scaled back, as is your health loss.  This is a catch 2-2 attack.  You can dominate your opponents, but you do so at the cost of your own well being.

Pollen Prince

If the thought of giving up health to deal damage doesn’t set well with you, or you just really like the Poison Cloud then Pollen Prince is the path for you!  This is a tough path to document because you have to be “in game” vs real enemies.  Cloud Control lets you have 5 Poison Clouds active at once…they also move faster and seek enemies.  The damage increase is minimal.  Most instances of damage remained at the 8-12 and 16-24 range, but a few hits were a new 18-27.  Buzz ‘Em Up combines the Buzz Dash and Poison Clouds.  When you dash thru a cloud you extend it’s life and up the damage, although not significantly.  Power Clouds makes the Poison Cloud extra big.  You can use Buzz ‘Em Up to extend the life cycle, but I found that they deal more damage 27-40 naturally than if you buzz through them as that actually drops the output back down to 24-36.  In theory, you would think that buzzing through a Power Cloud would result in 30-45, but that is not the case.  Overall, I think this is actually a good path, but it doesn’t deliver the same impressive grandeur you find with Speed Slammer.  This path also has a few issues.  First, as mentioned, buzzing a Power Cloud results in them doing less damage…and since all clouds are now Power Clouds, you kind of get shafted on that front.  There are also two things that I think would have made the path much better.  First, if the primary attack itself was directly upgraded from 23-34 to anything higher, it would have made a substantial improvement.  Second, I think that the Power Clouds could have been greatly enhanced if they either detonated on expiration, or you could dash thru them twice (or something like that) to trigger a radial explosion with a larger damage number, say even 60-90.  Despite the shortcomings, I still think this would be a solid path, it just feels a little under developed and doesn’t quite match up with Speedy Slammer.

Speedy Slammer

If you weren’t scared off at the thought of losing health toe execute the Fly Slam, you’ve come to the right place!  We get started with Spin Cycle which seems to pull enemies in and add 2 hits to the charge time, dealing the same 20-30 12 times instead of 10.  Buzz Buzz Buzz lets you dash up to 5 times by holding the secondary attack button.  The standard dash stays at 44-66 and the chained dashes remain at 136-204.  There were some instances of 68 and 92 that came off broken chains and singular Buzz Dashes, but they didn’t occur at a marked frequency.  Slam Apples sees the Fly Slam extend from 10 to 12 to 18 counts of 20-30 damage.  If you are sad that didn’t increase by now, fear not…the final slam, which has remained at 334-501 since Buzzerker Overdrive now does an insane 734-1101!  That is in OP Wow Pow, or Elite territory!  However, you do loose more health than you regenerate, despite the Slam Apples dealing out +5 Health.  That said, you should, at this pace, destroy your opponents before your own health is truly jeopardized.  If you are concerned, just wait for Organic Slam Apples.

Soul Gem

Organic Slam Apples is an upgrade that might make you take Speed Slammer, with or without research.  Many of you, myself included, likely preview the upgrades in game and then see Slam Apples tied in with Speed Slammer.  There is NO mention of apples with Pollen Prince.  So, you might say, “Ok, this is one of those paths I need to take to utilize the Soul Gem.”  The good news is, this does function with Pollen Prince and it delivers the same +10 Health from the apples…however, there aren’t as many of them.  Essentially it is a nice boost each time you elect to use your tertiary attack (which has no further upgrades via Pollen Prince).  If you couple this with Speed Slammer, however, you are very well served.  Where we were putting down a ridiculous 734-1101 from Slam Apples, we were also doing so at the expense of our own well being.  Organic Slam Apples seems to deliver 10 Apples around a fully charged slam that each regenerate +10 Health.  Similarly, this is what you lose when executing a slam.  So, in theory, as long as you didn’t take damage from the enemy horde you are attacking, you can start the slam, fully charge it, and finish it at the exact same health if you collect all the apples.  In a clutter free environment with little lateral movement from the attack, you automatically pickup all the apples.  If you migrate towards more, or different enemies you will get most of the apples, but might miss a few.  You have a few seconds to collect the remainder.  Either way, this Soul Gem clearly favors the Speed Slammer Path, but does at least work with Pollen Prince.

Attack Damage Numbers (Click to Enlarge)

Conclusion

I personally prefer Speed Slammer.  I would recommend it for rookie players, younger players, and those who just like simple to master paths and/or paths that deal insane damage.  That said, Pollen Prince is a unique path and one that I would not hesitate to stick with…It isn’t as impressive, but when mastered, you can essentially keep 2-3 of the 5 clouds on screen and alive.  This means they deal roughly 20-40 while you dash, or fire off the primary Poison Pellets.  I do fell my earlier suggestions would make this path more formidable, but it certainly does stand on its’ own merits.  That said, my vote would go to Speed Slammer for uniqueness and devastating damage.  The Soul Gem pretty much eliminates the downside to fully charging the Fly Slam.

Zoo Lou Upgrade Paths and Damage Numbers

Zoo Lou Base Upgrades

Legendary Zoo Lou Base Upgrades

Zoo Lou Attack Damage Numbers

Zoo Lou The Bucking Boar Upgrade Path

Zoo Lou The Wild Wolf Upgrade Path

Zoo Lou is a very unique character.  He never physically attacks enemies himself, but rather relies on summoned animal friends to do the dirty work.  You have Birds, Boars, and Wolves in the arsenal.  The Birds are the primary attack, the Wolf is the secondary attack, and the Boar is the tertiary attack.  The Base Upgrades address Birds and add the Boar along with one supporting upgrade.  The Wolf is left completely out of the loop in the Base Upgrades.

Naturally, many would think, "Okay, the Wolf was left out, I should take Wild Wolf to balance things out."  The Strategy Guide even boldly states, "The Wild Wolf Path edges it out (Bucking Boar Path) because Bird Call upgrades also help out against groups and you get extra food as a bonus."  I have seen the strategy guide state the obvious and offer insights, but I can't recall seeing it blatantly tell you which path is better

And now that I have seen it...I disagree.

Wild Wolf is an okay path...in fact, it is probably a great path for those having trouble in challenges or tough portions of story mode.  Alpha Wolf increases the attack damage and health of the wolf and Hunger of the Wolf gets him to attack a little quicker.  That said, Hunter and Gatherer is the big payoff as this is where the Wolf will dig up food when your health is low.

I didn't get to check the health of the wolf, or have food dug up for me, but I feel I know enough.  I can't argue that getting food at low health is of great value, but what about needing damage support instead of the food?  My biggest disappointment is that there was never a 2nd Wolf.  Now take a 2nd Wolf into the mix and you have one aiding in on immediate protection and the other digging up food and we have something going.

That said, I still would have to recommend Wild Wolf for beginners and players who need a character with good health attributes to get them through tough parts of the game, whatever those may be...Hunter and Gatherer will definitely be worth while for those endeavors.

The Bucking Boar turned out to be a big surprise.  I'll say that just as not getting a second wolf disappointed me, the fact that the boar never got faster was also a disappointment.  What wasn't a disappointment was going from 18 to 58 Armor.  That +40 is a big deal to me and can be appreciated just as much by pretty much any Portal Master who realizes that increased armor on that scale can very well keep you from winding up at low health and needing food.  Hog Wild really didn't do much for me, but Rough Rider did.  This sounded lame and I was fully anticipating a few pebbles flying up and dealing some meager damage number like 5-8, or 10-15.  The 30-45 is great!  Plus, factor in that you are doing damage on the boar from the front via Raging Boar and then have the rocks out the back and you have a great ranged attack from what was once slow and very limited in range.

However, the biggest asset in my opinion is the fact that you get Rough Rider's rocks and Thicker Pigskin's Armor in conjunction with the simple observation that you can summon both the Wolf and Birds (even the Soul Gem Birds of Prey) WHILE riding on the boar!  That is a big advantage in my opinion and definitely shifted the tables in favor of Bucking Boar.

Again, for rookies and players needing a Skylander capable of regenerative health, take Wild Wolf.  Similarly, if you just really like the Wolf attacks, take Wild Wolf.  For those on the fence, and the small few that might honestly prefer the Boar, go ahead and take The Bucking Boar Upgrade Path...I know you will not be disappointed!

Bumble Blast Upgrade Paths and Attack Damage Numbers

Bumble Blast Base Upgrades

Bumble Blast Attack Damage Numbers

Bumble Blast Bee Keeper Upgrade Path

Bumble Blast Honey Tree Path

Bumble Blast is a very solid character and I can see why so many say he is their favorite in the game.  Granted, he is slow, but that is one of the negatives you can have on the guy.

The Bee Keeper Path is what I feel almost everyone will be initially drawn towards taking.  From that segment, I wouldn't be surprised if 7 in 10 don't wind up taking it.  While I don't think those that take it will be disappointed, I would personally go with Honey Tree.

Bee Keeper will offer up three bees at once (Bee Armada), increased damage from more bees (Stirred up a Nest), and an attack that deals anywhere from 32-62 (Queen Bee).  I equate this path to a kind of Life Element rendition of Trigger Happy.  I think most everyone will be content with this path...the only catch is to maximize damage you will want to make sure you have Honey Glob out and about.

The Honey Tree Path is nowhere near as flashy.  It's biggest selling point to me was Honeycomb Bark for the +40 Armor (again, I am a sucker for Armor and Speed).  That said, it turned out to deliver BIG TIME.  Honey Buzz Blast lets you charge Honey Glob and unleash not only the glob of Honey, but pre-packed angry bees.  Heavy Honey ups the damage and slows enemies, which is a very nice asset considering how slow Bumble Blast is.  Couple the instant offense, slowed enemies, and increased Armor and I think you have the superior path.

For veteran players, I would encourage you to take Honey Tree.  For rookie players, I think you would also benefit from Honey Tree, but if you really like the Beezooka, you would want to take Bee Keeper.  The Bee Keeper isn't a bad path, it is just a more direct, blatantly offensive path.

I personally, with no hesitation, back Honey Tree.  It delivers my armor, helps offset Bumble Blast's lack of speed by slowing enemies, and turns Honey Glob into a powerful attack that you can then use the base upgrade Beezook attacks with, or charge for instant bee-satisfaction.  I ultimately feel it makes him a more well rounded character.  The Bee-Pack Backpack is a big addition to either path, although some may object to it aesthetically...Despite it's less than desirable looks, it is worthwhile in my opinion due to the frequent, powerful attacks.

Where Did You Get It? Special Delivery and Target
What Did It Cost? $14.99 plus tax
What Was Stock Like? No Stock, In the Back, In a Locked Case

Unboxing Stink Bomb

Stink Bomb
Life Element, SWAP Force, Sneak

Slogan: "Clear the Air!"

Card Stats
Power: 140/200
Armor: 85/200
Agility: 150/200
Luck: 15/200
Totals: 390/800

Thanks to a special delivery, Stink Bomb arrived!  I was ecstatic as I had pretty much decided the chances of getting lucky at Target were slim-to-none.  That said, I still tried and it paid off big time!  A super nice employee checked the back and found 1 Stink Bomb and 2 Rubble Rousers in a locked case, in the back.  I took the Stink Bomb and 1 Rubble Rouser...someone else can have the other.  Surprisingly she came out with Hoot Loop and not Spy Rise, who has been reported to be the easiest to come by...That said, I'm not complaining..2 of the 3 have been obtained!

Stink Bomb looks really cool...I am a big fan of the LIFE Element logo on the backside of his vest.  He looks to have a bit of Stealth Elf in him with the martial arts background and Sneak ability...Plus, it looks like he has the chance to be very quick.  Daphney from Twitter has already expressed interest in getting a 2nd Stink Bomb because his paths are so good.

If you are still trying Target you might try for the "locked case" route...it is worth a shot.  The girl at the front said people had been stealing the Skylanders so who knows, it could have been a local "fix" or perhaps something from a top down directive.

I'm not sure how long of a window Target has for the timed exclusive, but it shouldn't be more than a few weeks and I am hopeful that they get stock to justify their timed window, or that we see a nice stock appear at other retailers when the window expires.

I can't stress enough not to rush out and pay 2-4x retail for these guys.  Give it a few weeks and they will likely be common place.  There are more SF Portal Masters out there now after Christmas, but keep in mind not everyone is informed and acts immediately.  If you are diligent and stay in-the-know, you will usually come out on top.  All I can say is good luck!  I am very excited to get this guy on the Portal and see how he performs.  At E3 I saw a clip with Stink Bomb and Night Shift...it looked like they made a very nice pairing (this was backroom stuff btw, no filming).

I will try to get the introduction video up BEFORE the backlog...perhaps this weekend.

Any Monday can turn into a pretty good day when Skylanders are involved...Such was the case today as Barkley and Mini Jini both showed up!

Unboxing Skylanders Giants Sidekick Barkley

Barkley was my second choice for Giants Sidekicks...I had him right behind Eye Small.  After opening Barkley I now consider him the best Sidekick.  His detail, for the scale, is immaculate.  He retains key features seen in Tree Rex and has a great pose to go with his superior detail.

Here are some pics to showcase just that:

Skylanders Giants Unboxing LightCore Shroomboom

Skylanders Giants Unboxing LightCore Shroomboom

What?  LightCore Shroomboom, Life Element, New Skylander

Where Did You Get It?  Amazon.com

How Much Did It Cost?  $11.96 plus tax (Free Super Saver Shipping)

What Is Included?  LightCore Shroomboom, Stat Card, and Sticker Sheet with Web Code

What Was Stock Like?  I have STILL never seen LightCore Shroomboom anywhere in person.  If not for Amazon's listing I would still be looking.

What Lights Up?  Shroomboom's Eye (white) and the Mushroom in his right hand (green)

Quick Character Info

Slogan:  "He Shoots, He Spores!"

Stats:

Power/Strength: 60/150
Defense/Armor: 80/150
Speed/Agility: 50/150
Luck: 110/150
Totals: 300/600

Conclusion

LightCore Shroomboom has basically done a vanishing act since his release at Toys'R'Us.  I have NEVER seen him in person at any store.  If you do not want the Dragonfire Cannon Battle Pack this is a way for you to pick up Shroomboom and add him to your stable.  Do not pay more than retail!!

As for the light-up effect on this one, I think they did a nice job.  Rather than yet another disappointment, I think the work done on Shroomboom suffices and casts a nice glow...the green mushroom really sets it off and pushes him over the edge.

I have seen online that the battle pack characters (Hot Dog, Shroomboom, Zap, and Chop Chop) will all get single pack releases, but I would not expect them until the end...That said, if you don't care for the Battle Packs or Light Core, you can still land Shroomboom, it will just be a ways off....

Overall, if you are a Shroomboom fan this is a no brainer.  If you are a fan of LightCore characters this one is nicely done.

Skylanders Giants Unboxing Stealth Elf

Skylanders Giants Unboxing Series 2 Stealth Elf

What?  Stealth Elf, Series 2, Life Element Skylander

Where Did You Get It?  Amazon.com

What Did It Cost?  $9.96 plus tax (Free Shipping)

What Is Included?  Stealth Elf, Sticker Sheet, and Web Code for Skylanders Universe

What Was Stock Like?  Pretty easy to find online.  I suggest Amazon.com, GameStop.com, and Walmart.com.  Locally I have only seen standard S2 Stealth Elf in single pack form once at TRU.

Quick Character Info

Slogan: "Silent but Deadly!"

Stats

Power/Strength: 60/150
Defense/Armor: 40/150
Agility/Speed: 120/150
Luck: 70/150
Totals: 290/600

Conclusion

Stealth Elf is a big time player in the Skylanders franchise and one, if not the quickest out of the entire cast of characters.  Her repose is done quite well in that it showcases her Elven Sunblande and places her in a "motion" pose.  She joins Legendary Stealth Elf in this go around.  I would highly suggest you add Stealth Elf to your arsenal if you do not have her.  She should be in any serious collection for the completionist, or casual player.

Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure Unboxing Triple Pack H: Camo, Ignitor, Warnado

Having waited on the Amazon.com pre-order, I had a hard time passing up the instant gratitude of ordering the Camo, Ignitor, Warnado Triple Pack from GameStop.com I pulled the trigger and got it in Thursday, May 3rd, 2012.  Here is the unboxing:

I have to say, it is only fitting I got "notice of pending shipment" from Amazon the next day, but hey, what can you do?  Wham-Shell is all I lack at this point and I am hoping Amazon gets him out pretty soon.  In the mean time I will definitely enjoy having Camo and Warnado around.

As many of you know, I have been waiting for Warnado to come out since debut week.  I picked up those large posters they had at the game demo during launch week and nailed Warnado down as a potential favorite...I can finally see if he delivers.

This video will cover the background story on the Skylanders, their card stats, their in-game stats, and even their upgrade paths.

To recap the basics, and most asked parts, here you go:

Where Did You Get It?
-GameStop.com

How Much Did You Pay?
-$19.99

How Long Did It Take to Get It?
-3 Days

Which Shipping Method Did you Pick?
-Standard, I'm cheap.

Will you record gameplay of Camo and Warnado?
-Uh, yes.  I hope to have their Heroic Challenges up by early Monday morning.

Is Your Collection Complete?
-No, I still lack Wham-Shell.

Has Amaon Shipped Your Pre-Order Yet?
-No, I have a "soon to ship" notice on Camo and Warnado ( I wanted two Warnados, one for each path) and the other Camo and Warnado will be going to my friend.  I have no notice on Wham-Shell, but despite breaking the shipment up, both are slated for the sweet, "Super Saver Shipping" which is FREE.

All that aside, here is what you probably really want to see in text format if you are reading, the stats:

Camo "Fruit Punch"
#7 in Skylanders Overall Rankings

In-Game
-Health: 300/600

Warnado "For the Wind"

In-Game
-Health: 310/620
-Speed: 35/83
-Armor: 30/100
-Critical Hit: 10/60
-Elemental Power: 25/100

Card
-Strenght: 50
-Agility: 70
-Defense: 90
-Luck: 45

Conclusion

It is now 4 AM.  The unboxing has just uploaded and is almost fully processed on YouTube.  I am going to get some sleep, but will try to try out Camo and Warnado tonight...if all goes well their Heroic Challenges should be up before sun rise on Monday, lol.

The "Skylanders Overall Rankings" are determined by in-game power stats and health totals.  You can find the complete breakdown by selecting the "Skylanders Overall Rankings" tab on the right hand side bar.

This brings the count to 31/32...all that is missing is Wham-Shell.

Keep in mind that Wave 5 consists of the following:

Triple Pack H
-Camo, Ignitor, and Warnado

Single Packs
-Camo
-Ignitor
-Warnado
-Wham-Shell

Good luck tracking them down!  Walmart is your best bet locally...they have the best price and seem to always have the most regular delivery.  If your store is raided by a scalper, you might have to resort to buying online.  I would suggest Amazon or GameStop.

Hope you enjoy the video and find it helpful!

Blog Poll #23 Results: Which Upgrade Path Do You Prefer for Life Element Skylanders?

Blog Poll #23 asked, "Which Upgrade Path Do You Prefer for Life Element Skylanders?" and we had a nice 60-70 vote total for each (the poll was only open a week).

Here are the results:

Once more, no surprises...readers definitely seem to prefer upgrading the primary attack.

Stealth Elf led the way with 78 total votes and sported a +34 margin for Pook Blade Saint.

Stump Smash's Smash'N'Bash was +52 over Nut Crafter.

Zook, who not a lot of us would have had when the poll closed, sported a +44 for his Artilleryman.  I could see a few people honestly liking the Floral Defender route, but the question of course is will the base Floral Defender be weak enough and the promise of the Artilleryman path be marginal enough for folks to follow through.

Camo is the real wild card here as none of us have him.  Note that Melon Master was the Primary Attack despite it being listed second.  That didn't catch anyone off guard by the looks of the votes, however he was only +14.  I'm sure we'd get a better sampling if there were some gameplay vids folks could consult...and of course, first hand experience can not be beat.

But, as you can see, the Life Element Skylanders seem to be another segment that is overwhelmingly preferred on the Primary Attack Upgrade Path.

Thanks to all who voted!

Blog Poll #10: Who is Your Favorite Life Element Skylander?

Well, this is another poll you almost hate to post based on the fact that activision has decided to try and keep the hype up on this game until June...We won't be seeing Camo or Zook until way later in the year, but we will proceed on anyway.  My best advice remains to check out the Soul Gem previews to help make your decision...it is hard without playing the Skylander and knowing what upgrade paths are etc, but it is the best we can do.  Here are your choices:

-Camo
-Stealth Elf
-Stump Smash
-Zook

I know there are a lot of Stealth Elf followers and Stump Smash is one of the cooler designed characters.  The Poll will run 10 days so spread the word and cast your vote now!

I will likely run these same polls later in the summer when all 4 are released.
